App of the Week: Story Creator - Easy Story Book Maker for Kids. Parents and teachers can use this app to introduce unfamiliar settings like going to a doctor or traveling on an airplane. Once a photo is added, creators add a caption and either record the phrase or rely on text to speech. There are also drawing tools to doctor the photos if desired. During playback the words are highlighted as spoken which helps immeasurably with early literacy. Even better than sharing social stories is the ability for even young students to create their own presentations. Whether retelling a favorite fairy tale or doing a full-scale “oral” report, the simplicity makes participation possible for even those with severely limited verbal skills. Price: Free Device: iPad

SOCIL is happy to share that the permanent curb cut at the newly renovated Levee Park has been approved and construction is expected to begin at the first of the week. The City has also confirmed that it is expected to be completed before the Sternwheel Festival.

In addition, a railing will be installed along the steps before the festival, improving safety for everyone using the area.

These improvements may seem small, but they can make a big difference for people who use wheelchairs, walkers or prosthetics, as well as families pushing strollers and others who benefit from an accessible route.

SOCIL appreciates the City of Marietta and everyone involved in the project for listening to accessibility concerns and working toward solutions.

Accessibility means more than finding a workaround. It means creating communities where people of all abilities have equal access from the beginning.

We look forward to seeing everyone enjoying Levee Park and the Sternwheel Festival!
