Most of us want to grow older in the home we love. The trick is making that home ready for us.
3 out of 4 adults over 50 say they want to stay right where they are as they age. Not a facility, at home. The kitchen where the grandkids eat cereal, the porch, the neighbors who wave every morning.
But hereโs the part few are talking about: most of our homes were built for 35-year-old legs. The bathtub with the high wall. The bed thatโs a little too low. The three steps at the front door. The staircase that used to be nothing, now feels like a mountain.
So what matters most to someone who wants to stay home?
Doing things themselves. Getting dressed, making coffee, answering the door.
These things matter to them, and to the kids and loved ones who call every night.
The good news is that keeping that normal, everyday life doesnโt mean turning the house into a hospital room. It usually means a handful of small, smart changes:
๐ Grab bars by the toilet and in the shower. The simplest fix there is, and the one most people wish theyโd done sooner.
๐ฟ A shower chair or transfer bench, so bathing is something you can do on your own again instead of something you dread.
๐ช A stairlift, so the second floor doesnโt quietly become off limits. Your bedroom stays your bedroom.
โฟ A ramp at the entry, so a walker or wheelchair doesnโt mean being stuck inside, and the grandkids can still come running up to the door.
๐๏ธ A raised toilet seat or an adjustable bed, so getting up and down stops being the hardest part of the day.
๐ถ A rollator with a seat, so a walk to the mailbox or around the block is still on the table.
None of these change who you are. They just take away the reasons youโd have to leave.
If youโve got a parent or grandparent whoโs determined to stay home (and letโs be honest, most are), start with the bathroom, the bedroom, and the path between them, including the stairs and the front door. Thatโs where safety and independence meet.
