Grandmother Turtle and the Sky Within
She carries the seasons on her back
and the memory of stars in her bones.
Before the first fire was named,
before the rivers learned their songs,
Grandmother Turtle rose from the deep silence
with the old world resting gently on her back.
In her shell lived the turning of time—
winter breathing in silver frost,
spring opening her pink hands to the earth,
autumn scattering amber prayers through the trees,
and summer pouring gold across the pines.
She moved slowly,
but her slowness was sacred.
For the elders knew
that what travels close to the earth
hears what the hurried heart cannot.
Above her, the heavens spiraled—
a great wheel of stars,
a river of spirits,
a doorway of light beyond human sight.
And within her dark, shining eyes
slept the wisdom of moonlit waters
and the mystery of beginnings.
She was not only an animal.
She was a keeper.
A carrier of worlds.
A living prayer stitched together
with sky, stone, water, and breath.
The forests leaned toward her.
The mountains kept watch.
The flowers bloomed in her silence
as if they recognized an ancient relative.
Even the sun, proud and bright,
laid a warm hand upon her shell
and called her daughter of endurance.
The old ones say
that every season is a teaching.
Winter teaches stillness.
Spring teaches trust.
Summer teaches gratitude.
Autumn teaches release.
Grandmother Turtle carries them all
without complaint,
without fear,
without forgetting.
So when your spirit feels lost
beneath the noise of the world,
remember the sacred turtle.
Walk slower.
Listen deeper.
Let the stars return to your thoughts.
Let the earth steady your heartbeat.
For you were never separate
from the river,
from the forest,
from the turning sky.
You, too, are part of the great circle—
a small flame inside a larger mystery.
And somewhere beyond the last spoken prayer,
Grandmother Turtle still moves through the cosmos,
carrying blossoms, snow, sunlight, and stars,
whispering to those who are quiet enough to hear:
“Be patient with your path.
Honor the seasons within you.
The Creator hides wonders
inside all living things.”
