Primary teeth, or baby teeth, are as important to infants and children as permanent teeth are to older children and adults. Children need them when learning to speak and chew properly, and they’re important to a child’s overall self-image and confidence. Baby teeth also serve as “guides” for the proper eruption of permanent teeth. So, don’t forget to brush those baby teeth for two minutes, two times every day!

Growing and harvesting your own vegetables encourages even the pickiest of eaters to try new foods. Low on space? Grow herbs such as basil or cilantro in an old coffee can near a sunny window. Lettuce, chard, and other greens thrive in small pots as well. Your kids will develop a love for gardening and may try something new to eat!

Does your child experience sensitivity when eating cold or hot items such as ice cream or soup? This can be caused by tiny, microscopic holes in enamel that allow teeth to be more sensitive to temperature. You should avoid tooth whitening products for children unless it is something we specifically recommend. An ADA approved toothpaste made specifically for sensitive teeth may also help. Finally, brushing for two minutes, twice a day and flossing every day is always recommended. If your child struggles with tooth sensitivity give us a call today!

Flossing toddler and elementary school teeth can be hard, especially if your child has wide gaps. Dental tape is a great solution to floss teeth with larger gaps. Dental tape is wide and flat and designed to be gentle on exposed gums. When children are ready to begin flossing on their own, the width of dental tape makes it easier for small hands to grasp it and makes it more forgiving when children use too much pressure while flossing.

When choosing a toothbrush for you and your kids, choose one with soft bristles. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush is tough on enamel and can damage gum tissue. Using an extra soft or soft toothbrush is all the power you need to gently remove plaque and keep your teeth clean and healthy!

The goal of brushing is to remove plaque from your teeth, but plaque is actually pretty soft! Brushing too hard only serves to wear down your mouth's natural defenses and can actually lead to bigger problems down the road. Toothpaste is abrasive enough, so let it do the hard work!

Fresh fruit plays a big role as part of a healthy diet. Fruit snacks may seem like a healthy alternative, but they aren't usually tooth-friendly and often contain added sugars perfect for cavity causing bacteria. Additionally, dried fruit like raisins and plums can also stick to teeth. When possible, the best choice is almost always fresh fruit!

Did you know that candy doesn’t directly cause cavities? Instead, the sugar in candy provides the food that harmful bacteria need to create acids that wear away tooth enamel. That’s why sticky candy and hard candies are more likely to damage teeth because they stay around for a lot longer, hiding in crevices of your teeth. We like candy as much as you! Just remember to save it for special treats and don’t forget to brush for two minutes, two times every day!

If your child lost a baby tooth recently, it can take up to six months for a permanent adult tooth to appear in its place. Still waiting? There are times when a permanent tooth just does not follow its baby tooth and erupt correctly. Your child’s permanent teeth may not have enough space to erupt into place or it’s possible that the tooth underneath is erupting in the wrong direction. If you’re concerned about a tooth that’s slow to appear, it’s best to have us evaluate your child. Give us a call and make sure everything is on track for a beautiful smile!
