Today, on the U.S. Navy’s 251st birthday, we honor the generations of Sailors whose service has defended our nation and shaped its history.

Among them was William “John” Middendorf II—who began his Navy career as an ensign during World War II and later served as the 62nd Secretary of the Navy. His nearly century-long commitment to service reflects the enduring legacy of those laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
