Let us be clear, doulas are NOT responsible nor fully capable of fixing the systemic issues leading to significant and inappropriate disparities in care.

The fact that this article is from 2020 and we are STILL facing significant disparities shows how deeply rooted these issues are.

However, as doulas, we can improve outcomes for each family we serve. Even in a high risk medical birth, doulas offer continous support to help parents feel safer and more supported.

Many doulas also participate in Black Maternal Health Week, local and federal advocacy, awareness campaigns, etc.

It is currently Black Maternal Health Week. An important week to highlight disparities, celebrate those doing the work, and continue pushing for change to end inappropriate disparities.
