Sharing on behalf of the Michigan Women's Commission:

Uncomfortable Community Conversations: The Pause
The Small Business Association of Michigan Women’s Business Council hosts dynamic, recurring networking and educational events known as Uncomfortable Community Conversations. These sessions—frequently hosted by Kim Bode of 8THIRTYFOUR—are designed to tackle vital, often overlooked topics affecting female entrepreneurs, professionals, and the workplace.

This Uncomfortable Conversation is about what perimenopause and menopause looks like, what women need to know, what legal accommodations employers are required to make, and what all of this means for business owners and the people who work for them. This isn’t just a women’s health issue; it’s a workplace issue, a business issue, and a conversation that is long overdue.

Date & Time: Thursday, September 24 from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm

Location: 8THIRTYFOUR Learning Hub | 1365 Plainfield Ave NE, Grand Rapids

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to incorporate “speed dating” into a training session—and it was such a powerful experience.

For every person who reaches out to inquire about my services, I conduct a needs analysis. This allows us to create a program that truly serves their needs, rather than me telling them what I think they need.

What started as a request for a goal-setting session took a 360-degree turn.

As this particular client described his vision, it became clear that this was about so much more than setting goals. He wanted collaboration across divisions. He wanted to break down silos. He wanted his team to feel excitement and ownership around creating initiatives that could be achieved across departments.

What we created: A Culture of ONE.

We explored what it looks like to operate and function as ONE organization.

Then came “speed dating.” Beyond simply knowing what each department does, participants had conversations around a much bigger question: What can we do together to help one another achieve our initiatives?

Finally, participants broke into their divisions to identify what they could do to help fulfill the director’s vision, the initiatives they wanted to move forward, and which departments they could collaborate with to make them happen.

This extended far beyond goal setting. It became an opportunity to bring to life a five-year vision the director has been working to create.

What an honor it was to listen—to truly hear the desires behind his vision, understand where he wants to take his team, create the experience alongside him, and then have the opportunity to deliver it.

Thank you, Lee, for trusting me with your team!

In leadership, energy is one of our most important resources, yet many of us spend it as if a full calendar is the same as meaningful progress. This article explores why creating margin, setting boundaries, and protecting what matters most are essential to leading with greater clarity, presence, and purpose.

This morning, I received one of those requests many of us get: Could you help with one more thing? A conversation with a business partner reminded me how easily we take for granted the energy required to do our daily work. And then we add more—another meeting, another obligation, another commitmen...

This September, we’re talking about something so many accomplished women quietly experience: imposter syndrome.

Join us for Rise & Thrive: Authenticity – Your Greatest Strength, featuring Shelley Davis Boyd and Nikki Thompson, as we explore what it looks like to move beyond self-doubt and lead from a place of authenticity.
