A recent New York Times analysis highlights a major shift in higher education: the number of college students identifying as having has increased by more than 50% over the past decade, driven by greater awareness and diagnoses of conditions like ADHD, autism, and anxiety. As more students seek accommodations, colleges are being pushed to expand support systems and rethink accessibility, making disability services a more central part of campus life. While some debate the use of accommodations, this trend ultimately reflects progress—more students are advocating for what they need, and institutions are beginning to respond with more inclusive, equitable practices.

Universities from Harvard to Hampshire have admitted significantly more students with disabilities over the last decade, as diagnoses for A.D.H.D. and anxiety increase.

Even though people with disabilities want to work, their unemployment rate is nearly double that of non-disabled individuals—even as companies who prioritize workplace inclusion are better off.
