Mental health care can feel confusing because there are so many different titles 🧠 🤝 💬
A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in mental health.
Psychiatric NPs and PAs are also medical providers who can assess, diagnose, prescribe, monitor medications, provide education, and support the overall treatment plan.
Therapists and counselors usually focus on therapy, coping skills, patterns, emotions, trauma, relationships, and behavior change.
Psychologists often provide therapy and may also complete psychological testing when there are questions about diagnosis, ADHD, autism, learning concerns, or personality patterns.
No one role is “better.” They are different parts of care.
Sometimes therapy is enough. Sometimes medication helps reduce symptoms enough for therapy skills to actually feel usable. Sometimes testing helps make the picture clearer.
The goal is not to fit everyone into the same type of care. The goal is to help people get the right kind of support for what they are actually experiencing.
