The Power of Assistive Technology and Remote Supports with Ihoma Healthcare

Remote support is far more than someone sitting behind a desk observing daily routines. Assistive technology is far more than simply placing an Alexa device in a home.

At Ihoma Healthcare, both remote supports and assistive technology are deeply person‑centered services, developed through comprehensive interviews with the individuals we serve, their families, and their caregivers. Every solution begins with understanding, not surveillance, and is designed to enhance independence, safety, and quality of life.

We take exceptional pride in our Assistive Technology Team, a multidisciplinary group at the forefront of innovation. Our team includes Certified Assistive Technology Professionals, ergonomic specialists, occupational therapists, nurses, adapted physical educators, and university professors, all working collaboratively to design and implement technology that truly empowers people.

One of the many services we provide is assistive technology. We are proud to say that our Assistive Technology team consists of assistive technology professionals, occupational therapists, ergonomic specialists, physical therapists, enabling support professionals, and nurses. We always remain person-centered by always adapting the technology to the individual, not adapt the individual to the technology. Questions? Please reach out, let Ihoma Healthcare change your life, or the life of someone you care for, through assistive technology.

Building Real-World Skills Through Virtual Reality Experiences

Did you know that Ihoma Healthcare was one of the first organizations to introduce life-skills training within virtual reality environments?
One of our earliest initiatives focused on VR grocery shopping experiences. We partnered with neighborhood grocery stores as well as several larger chain stores to recreate their actual store layouts inside virtual reality. Products, aisles, and departments were positioned exactly where they would be in the real-world locations.
Before ever stepping into the physical store, individuals could practice navigating the environment, locating items, interacting with surroundings, and becoming familiar with the shopping process in a safe and controlled setting. This approach helped reduce anxiety, increase confidence, and improve overall readiness for real-world community experiences.
Since then, Ihoma Healthcare has continued expanding VR-based life skills training into several additional areas focused on independence, community integration, and daily living. Looking ahead, we are excited to begin merging these immersive VR experiences with NeuroAudia, creating an even more powerful sensory-informed environment designed to support focus, regulation, confidence, and real-world success.

The Enabling Network – “The Models of Disability”

How we define disability shapes how we support people. In this episode of The Enabling Network, we take a closer look at the different Models of Disability—including the medical, social, rehabilitation, and person-centered approaches—and discuss how these perspectives influence the way services, supports, and technology are designed.

We explore an important question: Is disability something within the individual, or is it often the environment that creates barriers? The answer has a major impact on healthcare, education, accessibility, and community participation.

The conversation also connects these models to the evolving role of assistive technology and remote supports. From smart home systems and wearable devices to virtual monitoring, communication tools, and AI-driven supports, technology is changing how individuals can access independence, safety, and meaningful participation in daily life. Rather than focusing on limitations, modern supports increasingly focus on removing barriers and creating opportunities.

Join us as we discuss how assistive technology and remote supports can shift the conversation from “fixing the person” to empowering the person—creating a future where support is individualized, accessible, and designed around real human needs.

Treating the person, not the diagnosis.
