One of my patients is a competitive tennis player.
Every summer, she runs into the same problem. During a match, her hearing aids will suddenly sound weak, intermittent, or distorted. The changes are random and unpredictable, making it difficult to focus on the game.
At first, she thought the problem was her hearing aids.
It wasn’t.
It was Florida.
Summer heat, humidity, perspiration, sunscreen, and outdoor activities can create the perfect storm for hearing aid performance problems. A bead of sweat over a microphone opening or moisture collecting inside a receiver can randomly affect sound quality and make a perfectly good hearing aid seem like it belongs in the junk drawer.
In her case, the solution was surprisingly simple. During competitive matches, she removes her hearing aids and stores them in a portable drying case. For her, tennis communication is often repetitive and predictable, and she found it easier to rely on visual cues than deal with sound cutting in and out at critical moments.
That solution may not be right for everyone, but the lesson is useful: summer weather can affect hearing aid performance in ways that feel random.
Fortunately, many hearing aid problems caused by summer conditions are easy to prevent.
A few simple habits can help:
• Wipe hearing aids down after outdoor activities.
• Avoid handling them with sunscreen-covered hands.
• Store them in a hearing aid dryer or drying container overnight.
• Keep a desiccant pack in your travel case.
• Remove hearing aids before swimming, showering, or activities that cause excessive sweating.
If your hearing aids seem weaker than usual this summer, don’t automatically assume your hearing has changed.
Sometimes the problem isn’t your hearing at all.
Sometimes it’s Florida.
A quick cleaning or a thorough drying may be all that’s needed to restore clear sound.
