Great actress!

Ellen Burstyn never saw this coming, and she's the first to admit it. At 93, the Oscar-winning actress received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 83rd Venice Film Festival, presented by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also directed her in "Flesh Impact." And if that wasn't enough, Burstyn is starring in not one but two films at the festival, including "Place to Be" alongside Taika Waititi, making its world premiere this week.

In the new film, she plays Brooke Graham, a widow whose quiet life gets unexpectedly disrupted by a carrier pigeon that won't leave, sending her on a journey that leads to an unlikely friendship with a businessman played by Waititi. The film reunites her with "Pieces of a Woman" director Kornel Mundruczó.

Burstyn told PEOPLE she genuinely never imagined still headlining films at this stage. "When I was making movies in my 40s, I was surprised I was doing leads then," she said. "Little did I know I would still be working at this level in my 90s." She credits staying close to her craft as the source of her fulfillment, telling young actors her secret is finding work you'd happily do for free.

On the lifetime honor, her reaction was classic Burstyn: "My general feeling is, well, I guess I did something right."
