The Nevada State Treasurer’s Office is celebrating 529 Day by giving families a meaningful head start on their children’s future.

In honor of the day, the office provided staff members at Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center with gift baskets to distribute to newborns and their families. Each gift basket includes a $529 gift certificate to open a Nevada 529 college savings account, helping parents begin saving early for their child’s higher education journey.

Observed annually on May 29, 529 Day raises awareness about the importance of preparing for future college education expenses.

Regional Vice President Karla Perez was a featured panelist during the Latin Chamber of Commerce Nevada's April luncheon featuring health care leaders, sharing insights on continually improving access to care, patient safety and operational efficiencies.

Karla has worked in the Las Vegas health care community for more than 40 years, beginning her career in 1983 as a medical records clerk at Valley Hospital. Through the years, she assumed a wide range of duties, from business development to hospital operations to serving as CEO for both Desert Springs and Spring Valley Hospitals.

As the Regional Vice President, she provides oversight to all our hospitals in Las Vegas, Henderson, Pahrump, Sparks and Reno, which also includes freestanding emergency departments, outpatient services and physician practices. Additionally, she serves on the Advisory Board for Nevada State Bank and Board of Trustees for the Vegas Chamber and Nathan Adelson Hospital. She has received numerous honors over the years, including several corporate awards for achievement of excellence and commitment.

We’re so grateful for her leadership and the impact she continues to make every day.

For Dr. Arthur Fusco, the Whipple Procedure (pancreatoduodenectomy) is a complex staple procedure in his repertoire. Now he has an alternative method added to his arsenal.

Earlier this spring, Dr. Fusco and his surgical team at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center completed the first Robotic Whipple Procedure in the Valley Health System. This was accomplished with the Da Vinci Xi Robot, which enhances articulation, visualization and the surgeon's capabilities during the procedure. This alternative method leads to a better recovery experience and shorter length of stay for the patient due to the robotic approach and smaller incision sites.

A graduate of the George Washington School of Medicine and Columbia University (premed), Dr. Fusco brings over 33 years and a wealth of clinical expertise. He completed his internship at the Staten Island and University Hospital and his residency at Mt Sinai Medical Center, Orlando Regional Medical Center and Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's. He is also a certified Robotic Instructor.
