Bombs Drop in Odessa

My dear friend:

Last night I was two blocks from where missiles struck here in Odessa, Ukraine. The target was the historic Bristol Hotel, but the impact could be felt and heard throughout the entire region.

I was on Fox News this morning.

I'm grateful I was able to share the insights we have from our years of working with the orphans in Ukraine through Abundance International, Inc.. Our people on the ground in Ukraine were able to give information not shared anywhere else. I hope you can take 10-minutes to watch this interview with Fox News.

The name of the Okhmatdyt Hospital comes from an abbreviation of a term meaning "protection of motherhood and childhood".
This is a multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment facility in Kyiv that provides specialized medicine for critical needs. This is a highly qualified medical care hospital, and the main facility for life-threatening pediatric ailments for the population of Ukraine.

It’s the largest children's hospital in Ukraine. This is where seriously sick children go for their last chance to stay alive. The hospital was helping children not just from Ukraine, but for many countries in Europe.

On July 8th Russian rockets attacked this hospital and ruined several of its buildings. The departments of the hospital where children had kidney dialysis was completely ruined. Approximately 20 children were undergoing the dialysis procedure when the rockets struck the hospital. Additionally, there were doctors actively performing kidney transplant surgeries with donor and artificial kidneys.

Other buildings of the hospital were also affected as the power went off at intensive care and resuscitation therapy departments.
Many children were taken off life-support medical equipment and moved to other hospitals in Kyiv.
The closest hospitals quickly reacted and prepared what they could to receive those children from intensive care. Timing was critical since their physical conditions were at such vulnerable stages. Leaving these children without needed medical equipment and electricity may cause additional casualties not yet reported.

Thank you for your love and ongoing support. We love these people. These innocent lives don't deserve such horrific death and tragedy. Our prayers continue to go out to the people of Ukraine and we pray for a quick conclusion to this war.

Ukrainian Orphans Need Help with Harsh Realities for Their Education

Hello, Friends:

As the new year starts and the children have started back to school, we are realizing how much help is needed to get them a good education.

The first harsh reality is that we have had to move even more children to local family homes, which requires distance learning with Zoom classes. However, when one home has seven children it becomes an impossible situation to decide which children will use the laptop computers for their classes and which must wait and try to catch up later. We’re asking for your help to buy more laptop computers for these remote families. We can buy these at a discount, but we need your donations to get it done.

The second harsh reality is that bombings on residential areas of Ukraine are not letting up. Just last week we had days with as many as 120 ballistic missiles being launched on civilians in one day! The urgent need to setup life in bomb shelters and basements continues. We need your help to continue building school rooms in underground locations.

This brings us to the third harsh reality is that the expanded distance between orphanages and the many foster families requires finding willing drivers in the most dangerous part of the country and being able to pay for their gas.

Again, we can only meet the children’s needs with your gifts. Thank you for your care and partnership with us as we address the harsh realities these little ones don’t deserve.

Christmas Delivered to Our Children in Ukraine
Hello, Friends:

I just returned from Ukraine. I wanted to let you know that your gifts for the children were delivered to the orphanage director with great joy and elation! All of us at Abundance International are grateful for your love and gifts for the kids for the holidays. The director promises to send photos from Christmas day so we can share some of it with you. We hope we can bring back some of the magic from Christmas’s past.

Visiting My Hometown of Mykolaiv

For me, it’s always difficult to see the impact the war has had on these beautiful people. As many of you know, I lived in Mykolaiv for many years, and I was there when some of these buildings were bombed but hadn’t seen some of the others.

I’ve never understood how hotels and universities were strategic military targets. For those who have seen my interviews in the media, you know my heart is for the people of Ukraine, who didn’t ask for any of this, yet so little was done to help them.

I’m grateful for what we’ve been able to do for the kids over the past 11 years of work there. We’ve built birthing centers, intensive care units, learning centers for down syndrome kids, as well as heating, electrical, and roofing projects. All the while we continued to provide food and medicine. Once the war started, the needs changed as our orphanages needed to adapt to the new realities of life in a war-torn country.

The fact that you haven’t forgot these orphans says so much about your heart and compassion.

As we prepare to celebrate Christmas around the world, just know that you made the lives of some very dear children better as well.

Ukrainian Department Declares Food Now Costs 3-Times More

One of our main goals in helping orphanages is to provide food for our children. We have been doing that since 2012, years before the Russian invasion. As the economy of Ukraine took a dramatical hit, the cost for most things jumped, including basic food expenses.

We are continually recalculating how much more expensive it has become for us to provide children with the same quality and amount of food as we did before.Please donate today for this month's food budget.

According to the Ukrainian Institute of Agricultural Politics, the prices for food are now three times higher than before the war. Practically speaking, their report shows that Ukrainians are now spending 42.1% of their income on food each month, compared with 14.1% an American would pay for the same food items.

18-Months of Critical Care and Still Going Strong!

Hello friends,

The news media may have forgotten the fate of these children, but you have not. I’m so proud of the team at Abundance International, and you. You’ve stayed with us and helped by our side.

Since the beginning of the war, we have been able to offer real help to 16 facilities. We continue taking care of 752 orphans, disable orphans, 12 families with temporary adopted children, 4 Medical facilities for children, one boarding school, 6 schools for orphans.

Over these past 18-months we’ve had to change our usual approach completely. We went from building, developing, improving, helping, spending time with children, to surviving mode. We had to find ways to make sure that our kids are not kidnapped, have food, and a safe and warm place to stay.

We’ve had to make sure we had people around to take care of them, receive medical support, and have access to education. As you can imagine, many people, even among our caregivers, left the country for their own safety.

Every day we faced new obstacles and had to adjust to the new circumstances. We were able to overcome them only with your help, our dear donors and partners in this work.

We all wish we knew when this would end, so it adds more gratitude to you for not leaving these children to be forgotten. We’re all in this for the long haul, and glad to have you by our side.

Families in Kherson Ukraine are Depending on Us

Hello Friends,

First, I want to thank you for responding to our family’s needs last week when their home was destroyed in the blast from a bomb. They are shaken, but alive and we’re helping them relocate to another city and get started. Your gifts were meaningful to all of us here at Abundance. It showed how beautiful our contributors are in heart and compassion.

It’s the first week of October and we must resupply our regional orphanages again and feed our orphan host families.

It seems simpler to grab people’s attention when we have a crisis, and this war has created many for our children. But I am asking you to respond to the need we face every month for the ongoing care for our Ukrainian orphanages. We still must provide food, medicine, equipment, repairs, and more. These needs rise again every month, and we are 100% dependent on your ongoing support.

[URGENT NEED] One of Our Orphan Host Homes Was Bombed and We Need Your Help

Hello Friends,
We desperately need your help to give emergency aid to one of our orphan host families in Kherson whose home was bombed and destroyed just a few days ago.

As you can imagine, daily life in the occupied region of Kherson Ukraine consists of air raid sirens and prayers for safety. As we’ve shared with you before, a year and a half ago we had to help our orphanages in that region to save the children from being kidnapped by Russian invaders.

Generous local families took our orphans into their homes to give them a shelter and care for them. We had to build basements, arrange food and medical supplies, help to relocate children, buy alternative equipment and sources for heating, arrange new buildings to be able to accept more orphans from occupied or ruined territories among other things. All of that was made possible by your donations. It’s been a lot of hard work to find the resources and places needed to make this all possible.

Unfortunately, Russians have more than ruined any chance of a peaceful life for our orphanages by invading but continue ruining lives. The house of one of our families, who took in four orphans in addition to their own two children, was bombed on September 23rd, 2023. The only good news is that none of the family members or our orphans were hurt. Thanks to the parents, they had gone to the basement when the air raid sirens sounded.

We are currently working on finding a place for this family to relocate, we are helping them to save whatever is left after guided aerial bombs destroyed their house. The family consists of 7 members. They lost all household appliances and clothes in addition to the house itself.

We are just very grateful that everyone survived, but we’re asking for your urgent response and donations so we can help in every way possible. Can you even imagine if this had happened to you?

Your Support's Ripple Effect: The Rise of Underground Education in Ukraine

Daily life for children during the war, especially the orphans in our care is our responsibility and our main job. Caring for their safety, nutrition, living conditions, education, physical and mental health is a lot for our staff and care givers. Of course, our greatest hope is things can be changed for better, but, until the war ends, we must make the best with what we’re given.

In our previous letters we raised a topic about new school year. The war activity left many children without any ability to receive education. Many children who were relocated because of the war had to adjust to the new environment. Ukrainian Government understands this problem and they developed ways to solve it, at least partially. For example, children in Kharkov will study in the underground, literally, in the Metro. Places for 60 classes of children were equipped in the Kharkiv underground. 34 busses will be driving children and teachers to and from there daily. It is hard to believe in this is really happening. We’re not aware of any similar situations in the world before.

We believe that Ukrainian educational department took at the examples from our orphanages and created a model for this system of underground schooling. As you may recall, we started the first project about equipping basements for the orphanages around 1 year and 2 months ago.

Not all children live in big cities that have an underground Metro. Not all kids have access to safe basements. We must continue working on that direction on their behalf. We are pleased to know that the Ukrainian Government took our solutions as an example. In a way, we, along with you as our donation partner, are making a difference across the country of Ukraine.
