Recognition matters most when it validates a vision that once seemed unconventional.
More than 30 years ago, the idea that live music could intentionally support health and healing was far from mainstream.
In the early 1990s, Music4Life founder Judith Pinkerton was performing as a union violinist when her ensemble proposed a library performance designed specifically for healing. Support was requested through the American Federation of Musicians' Music Performance Trust Fund (MPTF).
The answer was no.
At the time, using music as a purposeful wellness intervention wasn't recognized as part of the orchestra's role.
Today, that same organization supports musicians performing at hospital bedsides—bringing live music directly to patients. What was once considered unconventional has become an accepted and valued part of healthcare.
That's why we're honored that Music4Life® and our partnership with the Coeur d'Alene Symphony are featured in the League of American Orchestras' Orchestras in Health and Wellness Catalyst Guide (page 13).
This recognition isn't simply about being included in a national publication.
It's a reflection of decades of research, perseverance, and collaboration demonstrating that music can be intentionally used to support mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Together with the Coeur d'Alene Symphony, Music4Life is helping expand the role of orchestras beyond the concert hall through Music Wellness Classes and the training of Music Medicine Advisors, bringing evidence-informed music wellness into communities that need it most.
We're grateful to the League of American Orchestras, the Coeur d'Alene Symphony, our dedicated partners, and everyone who has believed that music can be more than something we enjoy—it can be part of how we care for one another.
💙 The future of orchestras isn't just about performance.
It's about improving lives through the healing power of music.
📖 We're honored to be included in the Orchestras in Health and Wellness Catalyst Guide and look forward to continuing this important work.
