𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗕 𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀.

It was so deep that it was resting 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗸𝘂𝗹𝗹.

In fact, while we were carefully working around it, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗸𝘂𝗹𝗹.

He needed an MRI, so the metal pellet needed to be removed first, otherwise it might be pulled by the powerful MRI magnets and cause damage to the person and the machine.

Because it was buried so deeply and difficult to visualize through the incision, we used a 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗶𝘁 and guide the removal.

And here is another part of the story that surprises people:

𝗡𝗢 𝗖𝗢𝗣𝗔𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗗𝗨𝗥𝗘.

The in-office removal was 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 with his Direct Primary Care membership — and his 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲-𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 too.

Last week, David attended the AANP 2026 National Conference in Las Vegas — several days of seminars, lectures, research updates, and clinical education.

But conferences are only one part of staying current.

Medicine keeps changing. New studies come out. Guidelines evolve. Better tools become available. Health and science news changes quickly. And no medical provider — doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or anyone else — knows everything.

That is why learning cannot stop after passing boards.

Aside from caring for his patients, David spends at least 5 hours each week reading new journal articles, following health and science news, reviewing new developments, and continuing to study topics that may help patients receive better care.

At Long Life Med, ongoing education is not just something we do because continuing education is required. It is part of how we practice.

We also believe this applies to life in general.

Your brain needs activity, challenge, curiosity, and purpose. Whether it’s reading, learning something new, doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku, taking a class, staying socially connected, or staying engaged after retirement — the brain benefits from being used.

“What you don’t use, you lose” applies to muscles, mobility, and the mind.

David is a board-certified nurse practitioner, not a physician. He is not perfect, and he does not know everything. But he does believe in staying curious, staying humble, and continuing to learn — for our patients, for ourselves, and because learning is part of lifelong health.
