This Memorial Day weekend, I’ve been thinking a lot about rest… not just taking a day off, but what happens when the body finally feels safe enough to breathe deeply, sleep fully, and begin healing. 🇺🇸

So many people are walking around exhausted, anxious, inflamed, mouth breathing, snoring, clenching, and running on stress hormones without realizing how connected it all is.

Your breathing pattern matters.
Your sleep matters.
Your nervous system matters.
And sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for our health is slow down long enough to actually recover.

In this new blog post, I dive into:
▫️ Mouth breathing & fatigue
▫️ Sleep, healing, and nervous system regulation
▫️ Why rest is not laziness — it’s biology
▫️ The connection between breathing, inflammation, and recovery
▫️ Simple ways to support your body this weekend

If you’ve been feeling tired but “pushing through”… this one is for you. 🤍

If you’re sleeping 7–9 hours and still waking up exhausted, your body may not be getting restorative sleep.

Sometimes the issue isn’t “how long” you sleep…
It’s:
• mouth breathing
• poor breathing patterns
• snoring
• clenching/grinding
• airway restriction
• nervous system stress
• fragmented sleep cycles

The mouth, tongue, jaw, airway, and nervous system are deeply connected.

Waking up tired is common.
But it’s not always normal.

🇺🇸 Today we remember the brave men and women who gave everything in service to our country.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend, it’s a moment to pause, reflect, and honor the sacrifice behind the freedom we live every day. ❤️🤍💙

I was born on an Air Force base, and most of the men in my family have served in the military. By the grace of God, everyone came home and I never take that for granted. Today feels especially meaningful because of that.

Grateful for those who served, those we’ve lost, and the families who continue to carry their legacy forward. Wishing everyone a meaningful, peaceful Memorial Day. 🇺🇸

WHO SHOULD CARE ABOUT TAKING VITAMIN D AT NIGHT… AND WHY?
If you struggle with:
• waking up tired
• restless sleep
• frequent nighttime wake-ups
• low energy
• inflammation
• getting sick often
• stress and burnout
• gum inflammation or healing issues
…you may want to pay attention to your vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D is much more than a “bone vitamin.” It plays a role in:
✨ immune health
✨ inflammation regulation
✨ mood and nervous system balance
✨ muscle recovery and healing
✨ oral health and gum support
✨ sleep quality and circadian rhythm regulation

Many people are low in vitamin D without realizing it — especially if you work indoors, wear sunscreen regularly, live under artificial light, or spend most of your day inside.

For some people, taking vitamin D later in the day alongside magnesium and a calming nighttime routine may help support deeper rest and overnight recovery.

And remember:
Your mouth is part of your body.
Healthy sleep + healthy breathing + healthy vitamin levels all influence healing, inflammation, immunity, and overall wellness.

Talk with your healthcare provider about testing your vitamin D levels instead of guessing. Optimal health is about understanding root causes — not just chasing symptoms.

Koffee Klatch at 8am has quietly become one of my favorite rituals — coffee brewing, sunshine outside, notebook open, and conversations that remind me how much there still is to learn about sleep, breathing, nutrition, airway health, and the human body as a whole.

This morning’s topics?
🍒 Sleep-supportive nutrition
😴 Blood sugar and fragmented sleep
🫁 Mouth breathing and systemic health
🍍 Fruit, minerals, antioxidants, and sleep quality
🦷 How the mouth truly connects to the rest of the body

I genuinely love learning.
Not because I need more letters after my name… but because every new thing I learn helps me better serve the people who trust me with their health.

There’s something really beautiful about starting the day feeding your brain before the noise of the world kicks in.

Slow morning. Strong coffee. Curious mind.
That’s my kind of Saturday. .aomt

As dental hygienists, we’re doing a lot more than “just cleaning teeth.” Every time we see a patient, we’re connecting dots between the mouth and the rest of the body.

We’re assessing:
💧 Hydration
🥗 Nutrition
💊 Vitamin and mineral status
😮‍💨 Airway and sleep apnea risk
😬 Clenching and grinding
🧠 Stress and cortisol
❤️ Systemic health conditions
👄 Oral inflammation and gum health
👃 Nasal breathing and mouth breathing habits
😴 Sleep quality and oxygenation

The mouth is often the first place the body whispers that something deeper is going on.

Bleeding gums, dry mouth, scalloped tongues, worn teeth, bad breath, and narrow palates are not random findings—they are clues.

As integrative dental professionals, we are trained to look beyond the teeth and ask:

👉 Why is this happening?
👉 What is the root cause?
👉 How can we help support the whole person?

This is the future of dental hygiene.

Whole body wellness. Rooted in oral health.

🎙️ We dive into this exact topic on the Unhinged Hygienist podcast, where Lauren and Tasia talk about the oral-systemic connection, airway, wellness, and how dental professionals can transform lives by seeing the bigger picture.

Overnight, your body naturally becomes mildly dehydrated. You’ve gone 6–8 hours without food or water, and your mouth is often drier than you realize.

Starting your day with water can help:

• Rehydrate your body and brain
• Wake up digestion and support regularity
• Improve energy naturally
• Lubricate your mouth and tissues
• Reduce dry mouth
• Help protect against staining

Here’s the dental bonus:

When your teeth are dry and dehydrated, they are more likely to absorb pigments from dark beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine.

Drinking water first helps rehydrate the enamel and creates a cleaner, wetter environment before coffee hits your teeth.

Simple habit, big impact.

Water first. Coffee second.

Your body, your mouth, and your smile will thank you.

WHO SHOULD CARE ABOUT THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEM AND WHY? Everyone.

Your immune system doesn’t start in your gut. It doesn’t start in your lungs. And it definitely doesn’t start in a supplement bottle.

It starts in your mouth.

Your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body. When gums are inflamed, bacteria can enter the bloodstream, be inhaled into the lungs, and be swallowed into the digestive tract.

If you mouth breathe at night, your mouth dries out. A dry mouth becomes a sticky, bacteria-friendly environment that increases the risk of:

* Cavities
* Gum disease
* Bad breath
* Snoring
* Inflammation
* Higher bacterial load entering the lungs and gut

Supporting your immune system starts with the basics:

* Brush and floss consistently
* Clean between your teeth
* Breathe through your nose
* Keep your mouth hydrated with saliva
* Optimize vitamin C for gum and collagen health
* Maintain adequate vitamin D3 and K2 levels
* Sleep well and reduce chronic stress

A strong immune system is built every day through the habits that reduce inflammation and support your body’s natural defenses.

Your mouth matters more than you think.
