Put your pride aside. The patient needs a team. 👏

Something I spoke about at the Utah State Assembly : having a different role doesn't make you better than or less than anyone else in the OR.

Circulators, spd, surgical technologists, surgical first assistants, surgeons... we each bring unique skills and responsibilities. We need to respect those roles while being willing to listen, communicate, and accept help.

Someone offering help isn't automatically questioning your ability. And speaking up shouldn't turn into a competition over who knows more.

It's not about any of us. It's about the patient on that table and how well we work together for them.

Sometimes assisting means learning where to put your head. Literally.

One little trick I've learned: keeping my head slightly above the surgeon's makes it easier to peek around and follow their view.

Same level? We're bumping heads.

Too low? I'm in their line of sight.

You eventually learn the dance. When to lean in, shift, and give them space while still seeing what you need to see. You find a rhythm together, and those movements start happening with a little more finesse.

It's one of those small things that isn't always taught, but can make assisting feel so much smoother. Even your head has a job in the OR.

He can operate an excavator and plumb an entire building, but ask him to dance for social media and suddenly he doesn't know what to do with his hands. 😂

I'm helping my brother get KJ Systems out there, and apparently that includes pushing him WAY outside his comfort zone. Am I a dance instructor? Obviously not. Are we both awkward? Clearly. But I'm having significantly more fun.

Go give KJ Systems a follow and show him some love! He brings 12 years of plumbing experience to new construction, remodels, and commercial projects, and I'm trying to convince him people want to see the guy behind the work, too.

Follow for the plumbing. Stay for whatever I convince him to do next. 👀

If you've ever fought an armboard for the right angle, you get it. 😅

The BoneFoam PROP elevates and supports the pelvis for SI screw placement, giving us the stable setup without building a mountain of blankets. Plus, it's radiolucent for imaging.

Pair it with the Arm Guard to cushion and secure the nonoperative arm across the body, opening up more working room. My favorite part? A quicker/better setup without all that silk tape on the patient.

Better access, thoughtful padding, and less positioning frustration. That's a combo I can get behind.

When I asked TK what he wanted his superpower to be, it became part of the OR Super Squad!

These books are such a fun way to introduce kids to the operating room and help them understand all the different roles that work together during surgery. Each person on the team has their own unique “superpower,” and every role matters.

My hope is to make the OR feel fun and exciting while starting these conversations early. You never know which child might discover their future career!

Speaking up in the OR can be intimidating, especially when you know it may not be received well. But patient safety has to come before our discomfort.

In this situation, I knew where the lap was because I was focused on my role and doing my job. That is exactly why every person on the surgical team matters. We each have different responsibilities, and when everyone does their part, we protect the patient together.

The surgeon may not have loved hearing it in that moment, but he trusted my knowledge, understood the policy, and knew what needed to be done. That credibility is built over time.

Speaking up isn’t always easy, but when something doesn’t feel right, it is always worth it. The patient is counting on us.
