Beginning of this month, Coach Clyde Emrich had passed on.
Considered to be the first Strength & Conditioning Coach for the NFL (Chicago Bears). A pioneer in his profession and world class athlete in his sport.
I did not know him for long, only met a small number of times, but for the short years that I did, I feel immensely privileged, and am undoubtedly grateful. One of the few I feel fortunate to have met in the coaching world, let alone learn from. One of the few that showed by example on how to be professional.
Unlike today’s culture, where people shamelessly fabricate defamation behind others’ backs. Solely to elevate their popularity, false impression of intelligence, and self-validity, becoming the epitome of cowardice and unprofessionalism.
Coach Emrich was the exact opposite.
He showed what it was to be a true professional in the craft. To teach, to help build, not destroy nor condescend. Simply teaching me that truth in your skills will hold steadfast. Be true to your skills and don’t be afraid to learn more. Their contemptuous lies will only expose their inadequacies because they don’t have your skills or your willingness to learn, and they will despise you for it. Be true and stay the course.
My circle of trust is small. The circle of openminded people willing to share their teachings with me, even smaller.
He always took the time to teach when asked. Always showing patience, despite my scattered curiosity, taking the time to explain in a pace I could keep up with. Always willing and welcoming in his teaching, never embarrassed with my presence, never judgmentally conceited in his delivery. Always making sure that I left with better understanding, regardless of how novice the inquiry.
Good-humored, respectful, and effective.
The quintessential teaching elder statesman. Professionalism personified.
Olympian. World championship medalist. Coaching professional. Teacher. One of the old school originals.
Rest well good sir,….and thank you!!!!
