Week 2 of our SWAG (Student Athletes with Academic Goals) program at Ellis Medicine was all about exploring the many different pathways into healthcare—and showing students that there’s more than one way to get there! 🩺✨
This week, students had the opportunity to learn inside the SUNY Schenectady County Community College Mobile Lab, where they were introduced to careers that require shorter-term training like EKG Technician, CNA, LPN, and PCA. We talked about how these roles can be powerful starting points that lead into advanced careers such as nursing, medical imaging, physician assistant, and beyond! They even learned how to do EKG's!
Students also put their communication skills to the test in a fun (and eye-opening!) activity that showed how the same directions can be interpreted in completely different ways—an important lesson for future healthcare professionals.
Lastly, they worked through a real-world scenario that highlighted just how many different healthcare roles come together to care for one patient. It was a great reminder that every role matters, and teamwork is at the heart of healthcare!
We’re excited to see these students continue to grow and explore what’s possible in their future careers 💙
