Why was USTI created?

After decades in the hair loss industry, Bill Blatter noticed the same pattern repeating itself: professionals wanted to help their clients, but many simply weren’t given the education needed to understand what was really causing hair and scalp concerns.

That’s what led to the creation of the United States Trichology Institute.

The reality is that hair loss affects millions of people, yet many practitioners never receive formal education on the science behind it. When you understand the root causes, you can have more meaningful conversations, make better recommendations and ultimately create better outcomes for your clients.

As Bill says:

“Let’s together help you fight hair loss for your clients.”

If you’re passionate about scalp health, hair loss education, and helping people with confidence and wellness, Trichology may be the next step in your professional journey.

6 scalp conditions. 6 ingredients. Most people are treating the WRONG one. 👇

That “dandruff” you’ve been fighting for years? It might actually be seborrheic dermatitis, Malassezia overgrowth, sebum buildup, or even scalp psoriasis — and each one responds to a completely different active ingredient.

Here’s the breakdown:

🟡 KETOCONAZOLE → true dandruff. Antifungal that targets the yeast at the root of flaking.

⚪ ZINC PYRITHIONE → seborrheic dermatitis. Slows yeast growth AND calms the inflammation behind those greasy yellow flakes.

🟠 SELENIUM SULFIDE → Malassezia flaking. Reduces the fungus and slows the skin cell turnover that creates visible flakes.

🔵 SALICYLIC ACID → sebum buildup. A keratolytic that dissolves oil, product residue, and dead skin clogging the follicle.

🟤 COAL TAR → scalp psoriasis. Slows the rapid skin cell production behind thick, silvery plaques.

🟢 TEA TREE OIL → inflamed, flaky scalp. Natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory support.

The mistake? Grabbing any “anti-dandruff shampoo” without knowing which condition you actually have. Wrong ingredient = months of frustration and a scalp that never improves.

This is exactly what certified trichologists are trained to identify — because healthy hair growth starts with a correct scalp diagnosis, not guesswork.

What happens when hair professionals finally learn what’s really behind hair loss and scalp disorders?

These are real graduates from our March 2026 Clinical Training sharing their experience after completing one of the most hands-on phases of their Trichology education.

Over four intensive days, students worked with live models, advanced scalp and hair loss cases, clinical assessments, consultations, and expert-led instruction designed to bridge the gap between theory and real-world application.

For many professionals, Clinicals is the moment everything clicks.

The confidence to identify hair loss conditions.
The knowledge to understand scalp disorders.
The ability to have deeper, more meaningful consultations.
The expertise to help people who have often been searching for answers for years.

Whether you’re a hairstylist, barber, cosmetologist, medical professional, or someone passionate about hair and scalp health, Trichology can open doors to a completely new level of expertise.

Their journey started with curiosity. Where could yours lead?

Scalp inflammation is never something to ignore.

Tinea capitis and an inflamed follicle can both create irritation, redness, tenderness, flaking, and disruption around the follicle opening — but they are not the same thing.

That’s why guessing is not enough.

A healthy scalp environment starts with understanding what is actually happening at the surface and around the follicle.

When buildup, irritation, or inflammation is present, the goal is to calm the scalp, support a cleaner surface, and protect the environment where healthy hair growth begins.

The follicle can only function at its best when the scalp around it is balanced.

This is why proper scalp analysis matters.

Most hair stylists genuinely want to help their clients.

The problem is that many were only taught how to recommend products and not how to identify what’s actually causing the issue.

When someone walks into your chair with shedding, thinning, itching, flaking, inflammation, or scalp discomfort, the real answer isn’t always another shampoo, serum, or treatment.

Often there’s a deeper root cause driving what you’re seeing.

That’s where Trichology comes in.

A Trichologist is trained to understand the science of hair loss, scalp disorders, follicle health, and the underlying factors that influence hair growth. Instead of guessing, they learn how to assess the bigger picture and make informed recommendations.

For many professionals, learning Trichology doesn’t just help them get better results—it creates new career opportunities, increases credibility, and allows them to serve clients at a much higher level.

If you’ve ever felt like there has to be more to hair loss than products alone, this conversation is for you.

Not everything happening on the scalp is visible at first glance.

Demodex overgrowth and head lice are very different concerns, but they both show why scalp health has to be evaluated closely.

Itching, irritation, buildup, crawling sensations, flakes, and inflammation are not things to guess at.

A healthy scalp environment starts with identifying what is actually present.

Because the right approach depends on the right assessment.

When the scalp is clean, calm, and balanced, the follicle has a better environment to function the way it should.

This is why professional scalp analysis matters.

A healthy follicle starts with a healthy scalp environment.

When buildup, flakes, excess oil, and irritation sit around the follicle opening, the scalp can become less balanced and more reactive.

The goal is not to “strip” the scalp.

The goal is to support a cleaner, calmer surface so the follicle can function in the best environment possible.

Flakes, debris, and congestion are not just cosmetic concerns. They can be signs that the scalp needs attention.

That’s why scalp analysis matters.

You can’t properly support hair growth if you’re ignoring the skin it grows from.

Most people blame DHT for hair loss.

But very few people actually understand what DHT is.

DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) is a hormone naturally produced from testosterone through an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase.

The problem isn’t that DHT exists.

The problem is that some hair follicles are genetically sensitive to it.

Over time, DHT-sensitive follicles can gradually shrink, producing thinner, weaker hairs until growth may eventually stop altogether.

This process is known as follicular miniaturization and is one of the most common causes of pattern hair loss in both men and women.

The good news?

Understanding the cause is the first step toward understanding your options.

In this video, USTI Founder and Clinical Trichologist William C. Blatter explains what DHT is, how it affects the follicle, and why education matters when discussing hair loss.

Have you ever heard of DHT before today?

What looks like “just dandruff” isn’t always dandruff.

Seborrheic Dermatitis and Scalp Psoriasis can both cause flaking, itching, redness, and irritation—but they’re very different scalp conditions.

🔬 Seborrheic Dermatitis is commonly associated with oily, yellowish scale and inflammation.

🔬 Scalp Psoriasis often presents with thicker, silvery-white plaques and more defined areas of scaling.

Understanding the difference is one of the first steps toward choosing the right scalp care approach.

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

If you’re a barber, stylist, cosmetologist, or beauty professional, learning to recognize common scalp conditions can completely change the conversations you have behind the chair.

People have been trying to cure baldness for 4,000 years. We only figured out how it works in the last 40.

The story starts in Ancient Egypt, where the Ebers Papyrus recorded some of the earliest known hair-loss remedies. Centuries later, Roman elites worried about thinning hair just as much as people do today, with legends describing everything from laurel-wreath concealment to bizarre scalp pastes made from burnt animals and animal fats. In Medieval Europe, hair carried religious and social meaning, while Victorian entrepreneurs transformed hair restoration into a booming industry filled with beautiful bottles, bold promises, and sometimes dangerous ingredients hidden inside.

What’s fascinating is that the desire never changed. Across every era, people wanted the same thing: healthier, fuller hair.

What changed was our understanding of why hair is lost.

Today we understand DHT, follicle biology, growth cycles, and evidence-based interventions. Trichologists are trained in the actual biology of the hair and scalp — which is why we can finally separate what works from what’s just a beautiful bottle.

Save this — it’s the wildest hair history you’ll read this week, and a reminder you’re in very old company.

Which era’s “cure” surprised you most — the burnt mice, the lead tonics, or that castor oil actually stuck around?

Follow for scalp science that actually makes sense.
