"You don't have to avoid it forever."
One of the most common symptoms of trauma is avoidance. It can look like taking a different route home, avoiding certain places, withdrawing from relationships, staying busy 24/7, or refusing to talk about painful experiences.
At first, avoidance feels like protection.
But over time, it can shrink your world.
In this clip, Natalia German, LMHC, and the Recovery Center Podcast discuss how therapies like EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) help individuals process trauma without becoming overwhelmed by it. The goal isn't to force someone into panic or relive every painful moment. The goal is to help them safely work through the emotional intensity attached to the memory.
Healing doesn't mean forgetting.
Healing means being able to drive through that intersection, walk into that room, hear that sound, or remember that event without your nervous system immediately sounding the alarm.
Trauma treatment teaches people that they can experience discomfort without being controlled by it. Little by little, confidence replaces fear, and avoidance no longer has to dictate their lives.
Whether you're a first responder, veteran, healthcare worker, or someone carrying the weight of past experiences, there is hope. You don't have to spend your life running from the things that hurt you.
Recovery isn't about eliminating every trigger.
It's about learning how to manage them so they no longer manage you. ๐
