Where your ESD funding Goes
During the month of July 2026, Frio Canyon EMS staffed shifts, providing 1,488 hours of on-duty coverage at the EMS station. We had 31 days of continued paid coverage. That is two personnel per day, 24-hour coverage. 1488 hours that had to be paid out. Out of those days, we had a total of 12.5 days of ALS coverage. These shifts were funded through the Emergency Services District (ESD), allowing our ECAs, EMTs, paramedics and drivers to remain at the station and ready to respond immediately when an emergency call comes in.
Having a crew already on duty reduces response times and helps ensure our community receives prompt emergency medical care when every minute matters.
Every ESD dollar is allocated to staffing and is used to keep trained personnel available to serve our residents and visitors. While this funding has greatly improved our ability to provide consistent coverage, it does not yet fully fund our goal of maintaining staffed coverage 365 days a year. Maintaining staff at the station for emergency response is costly, far surpassing the funding we receive from the ESD. This expense doesn't even cover repairs, supplies, fuel, licensing, insurance, and other essential operational costs for an EMS. Therefore, we rely heavily on donations and volunteers to bridge this financial gap. We truly appreciate your ongoing support.
