It’s September 1st, and it’s ! This is your monthly reminder to learn your normal. To do a breast Tit Check. 

In 14 days, it will be 5 years since my last active treatment. Five years ago, I was told I would eventually find my new normal. Today, I reflect on this new version of me. 

Five years ago, I had not experienced how quickly life could change. How quickly life could become just about survival - about getting out of bed, about getting through the next treatment, about breathing. 

Cancer slows down life. It’s like a zoom lens that can only see a spec of time. And, for a long time after treatment ended, I was stuck in that zoom lens. I was stuck in a mode of survival. 

Five years later, I’m preparing to take my first trip just for me, with just myself, in many years. It’s a version of me before cancer that feels foreign. But, this version of me is tired. This version of me does know that life can change with a phone call. 

This new normal does exist, but it doesn’t forget cancer. Survivorship is not a day. It’s not a week. It’s a lifetime. And, each day is just a moment in this new normal that I call survivorship. 

Survivorship evolves. 

And, survivorship starts the moment cancer enters our lives. 

Today, it is time to feel it on the First. To do a breast self exam. To report anything abnormal. It’s also time to share your story. Soon, I will get to start systemic testosterone therapy, something I've been asking for and following for over a year. So much more attention needs to go to menopause and menopause and cancer, but this is a great breakthroughs. Thank you to the doctors, patients, and advocates who continue to stay abreast of new research.

It’s August 1st, and it’s ! This is your monthly reminder to learn your normal. To do a breast Tit Check. 

This year is a year of fives for me. Five years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36. Five years since multiple live-changing surgeries, five years since chemo, radiation, and the menopause. 

In the last five years, I’ve had to become familiar with this new body of mine. A body that has experienced trauma. A body that remembers that trauma - even if the mind says it’s okay. A body that I’ve had to learn to trust again. And, a body that I’ve had to love. 

The days, months, years after a cancer diagnosis are not linear. They come in waves. The grief I hold back leaks out in the most inopportune times. Surviving the words “you have cancer” is not finite. It’s in the seasons. The seasons of grief. Anger. Joy. Peace. 

In this season, I’m letting my body rest. I’m letting it breathe. It’s worked hard these past five years. I’m giving it permission to release the grief, pain, joy, and peace.

5 years ago this month, I received the news that I was NED, no evidence of disease. While I still was required to do radiation, it marked the beginning of my survivorship. In 2 days, I'll mark 5 years since radiation began.

These last five years have been paved by multiple surgeries, new diagnoses, mental health crises, debilitating menopause, and growth. In the pain, I’ve also connected more with myself and my needs. I’ve found connections in the most unlikely places.

In February 2022, at my one year cancerversary, I joined YSC, Young Survival Coalition as a Face to Face leader for Austin. Since then, I’ve found community in hot flashes. In being diagnosed young. In the years I’ll face ahead of me as a survivor. And, I’ve found connection.

Today, art continues to be a source of wellness. A place I can go to when the grief of cancer overwhelms me. So, I enjoy this miniature turkish lamp and felted Corgi. And, I know that art continues to comfort me in part because of the YSC community that holds my grief and lifts my joy.

Are you a breast cancer survivor or thriver who was diagnosed under age 45? Join The Breast Buddies Creative Clubs where we will let creativity heal you. Some months, we will read and discuss books together. Other months, we will join in community writing and creative prompts. We welcome you as you are. Come join the community that surrounds you in healing and creativity. On July 23 at 7 pm CST , we will host a tea paper workshop (BYOS). Leading up to our, we will share out creative practices to help prepare you.
