MEASLES ALERT: KNOW THE SIGNS & WHAT TO DO!
Measles is a highly contagious virus that can cause serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Knowing what to look for and how to respond can help protect our families and communities.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF MEASLES?
Watch for:
🔹 High fever
🔹 Cough
🔹 Runny nose
🔹 Red, watery eyes
🔹 Tiny white spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
🔹 A red rash that usually starts on the face or hairline and spreads down the body
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU SUSPECT MEASLES?
✅ 1. CALL BEFORE YOU GO. Contact your healthcare provider immediately and tell them you suspect measles. Do NOT walk into a doctor's office, clinic, or emergency room without calling first. This helps prevent exposing other patients and healthcare workers.
✅ 2. STAY HOME AND ISOLATE. Keep the person away from others, especially infants, pregnant women, and people who are not immune to measles. Avoid school, work, public places, and visitors.
✅ 3. CHECK VACCINATION STATUS. If you or someone in your household may have been exposed, contact your healthcare provider or local health department promptly. They can advise whether MMR vaccination or immune globulin may help, depending on the timing and individual circumstances.
WHEN IS IT AN EMERGENCY?
Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, severe confusion, seizures, inability to stay awake, or signs of severe dehydration. Call 911 and tell them measles is suspected BEFORE help arrives.
