Measles outbreaks are occurring in parts of the United States and in other countries.

Virginia has one active measles outbreak in Buckingham County. VDH is working to identify additional cases, connect people to testing and care, and is offering vaccine to those who need it.

✅VDH encourages people who are not vaccinated to avoid large gatherings or crowded events.
✅VDH encourages everyone to talk to a healthcare provider about the measles vaccine recommendations for their family.
✅ People who live in Buckingham County may have a different recommendation for vaccines because of the outbreak.
✅ People who are traveling this summer should make sure they have had two doses of the MMR vaccine for full protection.

❤️🤍💙Those of us at the Cumberland Plateau Health District would like to take a moment to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice this Memorial Day. ❤️🤍💙

Today, we remember the brave men and women who laid down their lives so that we could live in freedom. Their courage and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends on what for many people is a day off of work, let us pause to reflect on the true meaning of this day, and hold in our hearts those who never came home.

"For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue."
— President James A. Garfield (speech at the first ever Decoration Day/Memorial Day ceremony, Arlington National Cemetery — May 30, 1868)

We are forever grateful. 🇺🇸

🩷May 22 is World Preeclampsia Day 💙

Did you know that preeclampsia and related high blood pressure disorders of pregnancy affect up to 1 in 10 pregnancies worldwide? It's one of the leading causes of serious complications for both moms and babies, and it can happen to anyone, in any pregnancy.

Preeclampsia usually develops after the 20th week of pregnancy, but it can also occur after delivery. The tricky part? Sometimes there are very few warning signs.

Know what to watch for and contact your provider right away if you experience:

🔹 A severe headache that won't go away

🔹 Changes in vision, like spots, flashing lights, or blurriness

🔹 Swelling in your face or hands

🔹 Sudden weight gain

🔹 Shortness of breath or chest pain

🔹 Nausea or vomiting in the second half of pregnancy

🔹 Upper belly pain, especially on the right side

🩺Early detection saves lives. Don't skip your prenatal appointments. Blood pressure checks and urine tests at those visits are some of the simplest ways preeclampsia can be caught early.

The Virginia Department of Health is launching a new measles dashboard. This dashboard shows key information to help Virginians see measles trends, understand the impact, and know their risk of exposure as measles cases increase nationally and across the Commonwealth.

The dashboard shows how many measles cases, hospitalizations, and deaths have been reported. You can also see case numbers by age, health district, and other key factors. Updates will be posted Tuesdays and Thursdays around noon.
