TEEN SUFFERS TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AFTER ATTACK AT PENNSYLVANIA PARK, FAMILY DEMANDS ANSWERS
A Pennsylvania family is searching for answers after 17-year-old Shawn Rinnier suffered a traumatic brain injury during an attack at Wissahickon Park in Philadelphia on May 10.
Instead of celebrating his high school graduation, the Saint Joseph’s Prep senior has spent weeks recovering from devastating injuries that have altered the course of his future.
According to Shawn and his family, he attended a tiki party in the park with classmates and students from other local schools when multiple fights reportedly broke out. Shawn said he believes he was trying to avoid a fight and was standing behind a friend involved in an altercation when he was suddenly attacked.
His parents said they received calls around 2 a.m. on Mother’s Day informing them that their son had been hospitalized. Shawn was later transferred to intensive care after suffering serious injuries.
His mother described seeing her son heavily swollen, covered in blood, on a breathing tube and wearing a neck brace.
Shawn’s memory of the night remains unclear. Investigators reportedly told his family that a Good Samaritan found him alone in the woods and called 911. Witnesses described hundreds of teenagers moving through the area that night, making it difficult to determine exactly what happened.
Philadelphia police are reviewing video evidence as part of their ongoing investigation, but the family says they have been frustrated by a lack of cooperation from potential witnesses.
After nearly a week in the hospital, Shawn was transferred to a rehabilitation center, where doctors diagnosed him with a traumatic brain injury. His family says recovery is expected to take more than a year.
The injury has also disrupted plans Shawn had worked toward for years. An accomplished tennis player who earned First Team All-Catholic honors and had planned to attend the University of Florida, he is now expected to defer enrollment while focusing on rehabilitation.
Despite the challenges, Shawn was expected to attend his graduation ceremony and hoped to walk across the stage without using his wheelchair.
His family says they are not seeking revenge. They simply want answers and accountability for what happened that night.
Philadelphia police and the Rinnier family are asking anyone with information or video from the incident to come forward.
