Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) and Loudoun County Government hosted the annual Youth in Government Day for high school students across the county.

Youth in Government Day provides students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to learn about the interconnected workings of Loudoun County government departments. This year, nearly 60 students participated - the largest group since the event's inception.

On Tuesday, the students actively engaged in problem-solving exercises focused on local government issues from the perspective of county departments and observed a Board of Supervisors business meeting at the Government Center in Leesburg. The students also attended a dinner with Board members, allowing them to further interact with the Supervisors and develop a deeper understanding of their local government.

Update: March 21, 2025

As part of the project to replace the lighting to athletic fields and amenities throughout Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park, the lights for the tennis/pickleball courts located on the park’s southside are currently being replaced. The courts will remain open to the public during daylight hours only and will close at dusk (7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.).

Lighted tennis/pickleball courts on the northside of Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park are currently open for public use.

As part of the planned lighting replacement project, visitors can anticipate temporary closures of the skate park, basketball court, tennis/pickleball courts, and pavilion in the coming weeks as additional work is completed in these areas.

Residents will continue to notice contractors and equipment on the park property during daytime hours through Spring 2025. For safety reasons, the public is asked to respect posted signage and warning tape around work zones and stored materials and to avoid disrupting workers. There should be minimal impact for those visiting the park and walking on the trails.

During the construction period, some park amenities may temporarily lack lighting for several days. Amenities that are typically lit year-round until 9:00 p.m. may be briefly impacted by the construction. Additionally, pavilions 4, 5, and 6 may be closed during light replacement in those areas.

The public is encouraged to visit the Hal and Berni Hanson Park page at loudoun.gov/hansonpark for ongoing updates.

Loudoun County's Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) has unveiled digital trail maps for ten county parks and one trailhead, just in time for the first day of spring. Now you can discover many of the county’s parks and natural landscapes with a tap of your finger.

Working with the Loudoun County Office of Mapping and Geographic Information, PRCS is making these free maps available through Avenza. This third-party app uses specially created geospatial PDFs (GeoPDFs) to enable offline navigation and location-finding using your device's GPS, even without a network connection. Users simply need to download the maps to their phones in advance. As park visitors navigate the trails, a blue dot will move along with them, providing real-time location tracking.

The free Avenza Maps app is available for download on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. Visitors can then access all available Loudoun PRCS Park maps directly through the Avenza store, at no cost.

The digital maps connect residents to over 40 miles of trails covering Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve (in progress), Bazil Newman Riverfront Park, Claude Moore Park, Conklin Community Park, Franklin Park, Goose Creek Pointe Park, Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park, Heron Overlook Park, Lovettsville Community Park, Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park, and the Evergreen Mills Trailhead. All of the downloadable maps are available at https://bit.ly/PRCSAvenzaMaps.

This new digital mapping technology will enhance the outdoor experience for residents and visitors, making it easier than ever to explore the county’s beautiful parks and trails. As Loudoun’s Trails and Waterways (formerly Linear Parks and Trails) continue to develop more trails, new maps will be added to the Avenza Maps app.

Visit loudoun.gov/parks for more information on Loudoun PRCS parks and trails.
