Loudoun County's Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) has unveiled digital trail maps for ten county parks and one trailhead, just in time for the first day of spring. Now you can discover many of the county’s parks and natural landscapes with a tap of your finger.
Working with the Loudoun County Office of Mapping and Geographic Information, PRCS is making these free maps available through Avenza. This third-party app uses specially created geospatial PDFs (GeoPDFs) to enable offline navigation and location-finding using your device's GPS, even without a network connection. Users simply need to download the maps to their phones in advance. As park visitors navigate the trails, a blue dot will move along with them, providing real-time location tracking.
The free Avenza Maps app is available for download on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. Visitors can then access all available Loudoun PRCS Park maps directly through the Avenza store, at no cost.
The digital maps connect residents to over 40 miles of trails covering Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve (in progress), Bazil Newman Riverfront Park, Claude Moore Park, Conklin Community Park, Franklin Park, Goose Creek Pointe Park, Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park, Heron Overlook Park, Lovettsville Community Park, Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park, and the Evergreen Mills Trailhead. All of the downloadable maps are available at https://bit.ly/PRCSAvenzaMaps.
This new digital mapping technology will enhance the outdoor experience for residents and visitors, making it easier than ever to explore the county’s beautiful parks and trails. As Loudoun’s Trails and Waterways (formerly Linear Parks and Trails) continue to develop more trails, new maps will be added to the Avenza Maps app.
