🎒 Let’s Be Open About Parasites: The Health Topic Nobody Wants to Talk About 🌿
As children head back to school, it’s a natural time for families to refocus on health and wellness. Between busy schedules, new routines, and increased exposure to different environments, supporting overall well-being becomes especially important.
One topic that isn’t talked about enough—but deserves open, honest conversation—is parasites.
Growing up from the Southeast Asia, parasite exposure wasn’t something people ignored. It was simply a part of life. We understood that the environment we lived in could influence our health. That experience has stayed with me throughout my life and has shaped the way I approach wellness today.
After caring for hundreds of patients at BeWell Integrative Health, I’ve also seen how important it is to consider environmental exposures as one possible piece of the health puzzle. While not every symptom is caused by parasites, they are one potential contributor that deserves thoughtful consideration, especially in individuals with significant exposure histories or symptoms that have not responded to traditional approaches.
Many people have common exposure risks such as:
🌱 Playing in soil or sand
🐾 Close contact with pets or farm animals
🏕️ Camping, hunting, or fishing
🏊 Swimming in lakes, rivers, or ponds
🌍 International travel
🥩 Undercooked meats or contaminated food and water
Some symptoms that can have many possible causes—including, in some cases, parasitic infections or other digestive imbalances—may include:
• Digestive discomfort or bloating
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Nutrient deficiencies, such as iron deficiency
• Poor sleep
• Skin irritation
• Brain fog
• Changes in appetite
• Grinding teeth during sleep (especially in children, though there are many possible reasons)
• Persistent gastrointestinal symptoms after travel or known exposure
Being open about parasites doesn’t mean assuming everyone has them. It means being aware, asking questions, and considering all possibilities when symptoms don’t have clear answers.
Back-to-school season is a wonderful opportunity to focus on foundational wellness—nutritious foods, quality sleep, movement, immune support, healthy habits, and addressing ongoing symptoms that deserve a closer look.
At BeWell Integrative Health, we take time to truly listen. We consider each person’s health history, lifestyle, environmental exposures, nutrition, symptoms, and overall health when developing a personalized plan of care. Every patient is unique, and every healing journey is different.
Our goal isn’t simply to manage symptoms—it is to help identify potential root contributors to illness, strengthen the body’s natural defenses, and support lifelong wellness.
From the BeWell perspective, prevention is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and our children. We believe in helping families build strong immune systems, healthy terrain, and resilient bodies so children can spend less time feeling sick and more time enjoying the most important parts of childhood—learning, growing, playing, making memories, and having fun with their family and friends.
Healthy children become healthy adults, and investing in wellness today can have a lasting impact for generations to come.
If you or your child have been experiencing ongoing symptoms and are looking for a comprehensive, integrative approach to care, we’d be honored to walk alongside you on your healing journey.
