Lessons are generally one hour long; the first half being dedicated to grooming and the second half to riding. Through grooming, tacking and riding their horse, participants develop skills that produce wide-reaching improvements in areas such as; fine and gross motor skills, motor planning, sequencing, memory, attention span, balance, hand/eye coordination, right/left handedness, communication, bo

dy awareness, flexibility, teamwork, socialization, coordination and improved self-esteem. The recreational aspect of STAR's program proves invaluable for these special persons who often cannot participate in conventional sports.

Welcome to STAR, Dallas! 🎉🐎

Meet Dallas, a 21-year-old bay Quarter Horse who originally hails from Florida! Dallas belongs to our Programs Manager, Kara, and she comes to STAR with quite the resumé.

Over the years, Dallas has done a little bit of everything — barrels, poles, roping, western and ranch pleasure, trail riding, parades, and even a little jumping! She also spent several years as a lesson horse and kids’ show horse, helping young riders learn the ropes.

For the last few years, Dallas has been enjoying a quieter life out in the pasture. Lately, though, she has been showing Kara that she might just be ready to have a job again. So, we thought we would see what she thinks about joining the STAR Herd!

With all of her experience, we are excited to get to know Dallas, introduce her to life at STAR, and see if she decides this is the next job for her.

Welcome, Maya! 🎉

Maya is STAR’s current fall equine intern. She is a sophomore pre-vet animal science major at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She’s a recreational Western rider, and she has a strong passion for Equine and Large Animal medicine. She is so excited to learn more about the therapeutic riding process, and gain more equine experience from this opportunity at STAR! If you see her in the barn, swing by and say hello!

🎉🐴 Wecome Back, Moose!

Moose is a 15-year-old black and white leopard coated Knabstrupper gelding, which some of you may remember him from his time with us before!

Moose has spent the last little while at another program, where he did really well. Sadly, that program has decided to close, and his owner reached out to see if we would like to give Moose another chance with us. We always liked this special guy, and we're hoping he will be just as happy to be back as we are to have him!

Moose belongs to our very own veterinarian from UT, Dr. Kady. He may be missing his right eye, but he certainly doesn't seem to let that slow him down!

We're excited to welcome Moose back, get reacquainted, and see just how much he has grown during his time away.

🎉Welcome Megan to the STAR Family as Programs Assistant!

Megan served the summer of 2026 as an intern before taking on the full-time position with the programs staff. She has a bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation from UTK and an associates degree in Science from Chattanooga State Community College. Megan has been riding horses most of her life, and she has experience competing in a variety of disciplines, including Western, Dressage, and English. In her free time, she enjoys riding her horse, Ready, or paddle boarding.

Megan is currently working on obtaining her CTRI through PATH Intl. and is part of our Instructor In Training program. Make sure to say hi if you see her in classes or out in the barn. Welcome Megan! We're so glad to have her on the team!

🍂 Welcome Back to a Fresh New Look at Shangri-La! 🍂

As our participants return for the fall session, you’ll notice a major update! Our office suite and admin building just got a complete repaint and lighting refresh, courtesy of Rincon Remodeling.

We selected a light, bright palette—including a soothing new shade called "Retreat" green 🌿 to bring a sense of peace and tranquility to everyone who steps through our doors. It’s a perfect nod to the meaning of Shangri-La.

Huge thanks to Rincon Remodeling for bringing this vision to life with such care and craftsmanship. We can’t wait for you to see it!

Our 10th-Annual Songwriters in the Round presented by Evergreen Custom Construction was one for the books! A huge thank you to our incredible lineup — Phillip Lammonds, Nicole Witt, Matt Warren, and Andy Austin — for an unforgettable night of music and stories. 🎸🎤
