Reimbursement structure in America is set by insurance companies and the sole focus of the fee schedule is to incentivize doctors to do things that will increase insurance company profits. Premiums go up. Payments go down. Did you know that only 8% of money spent on healthcare actually comes to doctors? Remember, that’s before overhead, paying staff, buying equipment, paying for malpractice insurance, paying the rent, etc. so in reality your doctor is maybe getting 3% of all healthcare dollars spent. But hey, cut our reimbursements more. We are an easy target.

Being a surgeon is very fulfilling, but it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. The hardest part is coming to terms with the fact that patients you care about WILL NOT all do well after a procedure you recommended. It takes a toll overtime - and all of us surgeons feel it.

Complications happen with surgery. The question patients should be asking is not “do you have complications?” The right question is, “how do you deal with complications when they arise?“
