The Timeout

There are moments during games when you can feel everything speeding up.

Bad decision.
Another bad decision.
Frustration.
Players stop communicating.
Nobody can hear anything.
Timeout.

Not because we're quitting.
Because we need enough space to think again.

I've wished a few times in life that I had called a timeout before responding.

Before sending the text.
Before reacting.
Before assuming.
Before saying something I couldn't take back.

Today's takeaway: You are allowed to pause before you respond.

A timeout can change the game.

23

Numbers can tell stories.

For me, 23 does.
My older brother wore it.
I wore it.
And somewhere along the way it came to represent much more than a jersey number.

Commitment.
Hard work.
Perseverance.
Family.
Purpose.
That's eventually why it found its way into Thrive23.

Not because 23 is magical.
Because stories give things meaning.

We all have something like that.
A number.
A song.
A saying.
A photograph.
A person.

Something that brings us back to who we are when life gets noisy.

What's yours?

The Quiet Gym

I've always loved an empty gym.
Before practice.
Before a game.
Before everyone arrives.

There's something about the quiet before everything gets loud.

Life doesn't give us enough of those moments unless we intentionally create them.

Sunday can be that empty gym.

Before the emails.
Before the schedules.
Before everyone needs something.

Just a little space to ask:
How am I really doing?

Not what needs to get done.

Not what everyone else needs.
You.

Listen to the answer.

No Life Lesson Today

Sometimes I catch myself trying to turn everything into a lesson.

Occupational hazard after 30+ years of coaching. 😂

So today?
No deep lesson.
Drink the coffee while it's hot.
Watch the game.
Go outside.
Call a friend.
Move the furniture again.
Take the nap.
Eat something good.
Laugh.

Saturday doesn't always need to make you better.

Sometimes it can simply make you happy.

That's enough.

The Things Nobody Applauds

Nobody applauds when you:
Keep your word.
Apologize.
Show up on time.
Do the extra work.
Choose patience.
Tell the truth.
Start over.

Do the right thing when nobody knows.

Yet those quiet decisions probably tell us more about our character than the moments people celebrate.

My keeper this week:
Who you are when there's no applause still counts.

Maybe it counts the most.

My Kids Didn't Need Another Coach

When you're a coach for a living, it can be easy to bring Coach home.

Fix this.
Try that.
Here's what you should do.
Here's what I noticed.

I had to learn that my kids didn't always need Coach Stacey.

Sometimes they just needed Mom.
Someone who listened.
Someone who celebrated.
Someone who didn't turn every experience into a teachable moment.

I probably didn't always get that right.
That's part of parenting too.

You learn while you're doing it.
And sometimes the lesson is simply:
Be present instead of productive.

The Empty Chair

I've learned that not everyone stays at your table forever.

Some people are there for decades.
Some for a season.
Some teach you what support feels like.
Others teach you what boundaries feel like.
Both can matter.

As I've gotten older, I've stopped measuring relationships only by how long they last.

Sometimes the question is:
What did this relationship teach me?
And maybe even:
Who did I become because they were part of my story?

Some chairs become empty.
The lessons don't have to.

The Day Nothing Went According to Plan

Coaching teaches you very quickly that plans are suggestions.
Someone gets sick.
The gym changes.
A player gets hurt.
Travel gets delayed.

Your perfectly planned practice falls apart in the first ten minutes.

Parenting might be the ultimate version of this. 😊

I used to think being prepared meant having the perfect plan.

Now I think being prepared also means being willing to let the plan go.

Today's takeaway: Being adaptable isn't abandoning the plan. It's staying committed to the purpose when the plan changes.

The Meanest Coach in the Gym

Sometimes the toughest coach an athlete has isn't standing on the sideline.

It's the voice inside their own head.
"You're terrible."
"You always mess this up."
"Everyone else is better."

I've spent years trying to help athletes change that voice.

Then I realized adults aren't much different.

We say things to ourselves we'd never say to someone we were trying to develop.

So here's today's challenge:
Listen to how you coach yourself.
Would you want your child, player or employee being coached by that person?

If not, change the coach.

Halftime

No coach walks into halftime and spends the entire break yelling about everything that went wrong.

At least, hopefully not. 😊

You identify what happened.
Then you adjust.

Life needs halftime too.
Maybe you weren't patient this week.
Maybe you didn't follow through.
Maybe you said yes when you wanted to say no.
Maybe you crushed it.

Either way, the question isn't:
"What's wrong with me?"
It's:
"What adjustment do I need?"
That's a much more useful story.

Sunday is halftime.
Make the adjustment.
Go play the second half.
