Today, our Oak Glen travelers enjoyed a wonderful visit to a place that has bringing people together for generations— the Lewisburg Farmers Market!
The history of this beloved community tradition stretches back to 1858, when 10 acres of land were purchased by the Union County Agricultural Association. The site became the home to the Union County Fair, which operated for nearly 70 years until 1936.
After the fairground closed, the property was sold in 1937 to Richard Leitzel, who dreamed of restoring the spirit of the Union County Fair. To raise funds for that vision, he organized an auction. The first event attracted more than 2,000 farmers and community members. Auctions were held on Wednesdays, when banks and many business closed early, turning auction day into a weekly social gathering and evening entertainment.
Fast forward to 2026, and the tradition is still thriving! Every Wednesday morning, thousands of locals and visitors flock to the Lewisburg Farmers Market in search of the freshest seasonal fruit and vegetables, homemade soaps, butcher shop specialties, baked goods, treasures from the flea market, and so much more.
Our group had a fantastic time exploring the market, sampling delicious apple cider from Schlegel’s Fruit Stand, enjoying the famous donuts from Jake’s Donut Den, breathing in the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pretzels, and admiring the tempting apple dumplings at the Amish stand.
What began as a gathering place for farmers more than a century ago continues to be a vibrant community tradition today. We are grateful for the opportunity to experience a little piece of local history while making some wonderful memories of our own.
