Every September, Medicare Advantage plans mail out a notice saying what changes on January 1.

So many folks never open it.

It arrives the same week as thirty other envelopes about Medicare, and it does not look any more important than the rest of them. So the changes turn up anyway. At the pharmacy counter. At the front desk. On a bill.

Every fall our team sits down with our clients and goes through that notice line by line. This year I wrote the whole process down so anyone can run it themselves at home.

Six checks. Very, very easy to follow, with blanks to write your answers in. About twenty minutes at the kitchen table.

Every plan is required to mail an Annual Notice of Change by September 30. It explains what changes on January 1.

It looks like advertising, which is why it gets discarded, and it is the most useful piece of mail a person on Medicare receives all year.

Medicare cannot discuss a claim, a premium, or an enrollment with an adult child unless the beneficiary has authorized it in writing. Being family is not enough, and a healthcare power of attorney does not automatically cover it.

There is one form for disclosing health information and a separate form for appointing a representative. Which one you need depends on whether you are sitting in on the decision or making it.

My first year doing this, I explained an enrollment window to a client and got a detail wrong. He caught it. I have never forgotten it.

Sixty-five percent of people on Medicare say the program is confusing, and in one survey fifty-eight percent of college graduates said the same. Being smart does not help.

So if you have been sitting on a question because you feel you should already know the answer, that is the part I want to fix. Bring the question. No rush.

Kentucky law lets a current Medicare Supplement policyholder move the same plan letter to a different insurer once a year, within 60 days after their birthday, with no medical underwriting. No health questions, no prescription history, no denial on health grounds.

It is a plan-for-plan move, so Plan G goes to Plan G. It does not change benefit levels and it does not apply to Medicare Advantage.

The statute is KRS 304.14-525. If your birthday is coming and you want to understand the window, call the office.

Most families learn the difference on discharge day, which is the worst possible day to learn it.

This was my office in 2023.

One monitor. One phone. A picture on the wall I didn't pick and never liked. And two enormous chairs that nobody, not one person in three years, ever managed to get comfortable in.

That's where I got our first Google review. I was 24.

A man old enough to be my grandfather sat down in one of those ridiculous chairs, listened to a kid explain something that would affect the rest of his life, and decided to trust him with it. Then he went home and put his name on the internet next to mine, where his neighbors could see it.

He didn't have to do that. He had no idea if I'd still be here in a year.

Everyone who's sat down with us since has done the same thing he did. Handed something over to somebody they had no real reason to trust yet.

This morning we got our 70th five-star review.

Different office now. Better chairs. Same job.

Thank you, all of you. And thank you to the man who went first, when there was nothing to go on but a feeling.

We're just getting started.
