Your Car Is Basically an Oven…And Your Glasses Are Getting Cooked

We talk a lot about protecting ourselves from the summer heat.

Drink plenty of water.
Wear sunscreen.
Don’t leave pets or children in a hot vehicle.

But there’s something else you probably shouldn’t leave behind:

Your eyeglasses.

When temperatures start climbing outside, the inside of a parked vehicle can become dangerously hot and your prescription glasses, sunglasses, frames, and lenses were never designed to be baked in that kind of heat.

And yes… you can literally cook your glasses. 😬

What can heat actually do to your eyeglasses?
Warp your frames

Extreme heat can soften certain frame materials, causing them to lose their original shape.

That perfectly adjusted pair of glasses that sat comfortably behind your ears and across your nose?

After spending hours in a scorching vehicle, they may suddenly sit crooked, feel too loose or tight, or simply not fit the way they did before.

In more severe cases, the frame can become permanently distorted.
Damage your lenses

Your lenses may look like one solid piece, but many modern prescription lenses have specialized coatings and treatments.

Excessive heat can put stress on those materials and contribute to something called lens crazing.

Crazing can look like tiny cracks, spiderwebs, or a hazy appearance across the surface of the lens. Sometimes patients think their glasses are dirty because their vision suddenly looks cloudy, but no amount of lens cleaner is going to wash crazing away.

Once the lens or its coating has been damaged, it may need to be replaced.

And don’t forget your sunglasses.
Prescription sunglasses and regular sunglasses shouldn’t live in your car either.

We know it’s convenient to keep a pair in the center console so they’re always there when you need them, but during extreme summer temperatures, that convenience can become an expensive mistake.

A better habit?

When you get out of the car, take your glasses and sunglasses with you.

If you’re carrying an extra pair, keep them protected in a case and avoid storing them anywhere that will experience prolonged extreme temperatures.

What if your glasses suddenly don’t fit correctly?

Don’t immediately start bending and twisting them yourself.

If your frames suddenly feel crooked, uncomfortable, unusually loose or tight, bring them to an optical professional and let us take a look.

Sometimes they simply need an adjustment.

Other times, heat may have caused damage to the frame or lenses that needs to be addressed.

And if your lenses suddenly appear hazy, cracked, or covered in tiny lines, especially after being exposed to extreme heat, lens crazing may be the culprit.

Your summer eyewear reminder ☀️

Your eyeglasses are something you depend on every single day.

Take care of them like the investment they are.

Don’t leave your glasses baking in a hot vehicle.

Your car is for driving.

Not slow-roasting your eyewear.

And while we’re talking about this summer heat…
