🌙☀️ Day/Night Confusion in Newborns

Is your newborn wide awake at 2 AM… and sleepy all day? You’re not alone.

Day/night confusion is very common in the first few weeks because newborns don’t yet have a developed internal clock.

👶 Why It Happens:

• Babies were used to daytime motion in the womb
• Their circadian rhythm isn’t established
• Sleep cycles are short and frequent

🌞 How to Help Reset Their Clock:

During the Day:
✔️ Keep lights on
✔️ Open curtains
✔️ Talk and interact during feeds
✔️ Don’t stress about normal household noise

At Night:
✔️ Keep lights dim
✔️ Limit stimulation
✔️ Speak softly
✔️ Keep diaper changes calm and quiet

Consistency helps — but it takes time. Most babies begin to sort this out around 6–8 weeks.

💙 Reminder to tired parents:
This phase is temporary. You are not doing anything wrong.

If you ever have concerns about your baby’s sleep or feeding patterns, we’re here to help.

🍼💛 Why Do Newborns Receive a Vitamin K Shot?

One of the first important steps in newborn care is protecting your baby from a rare but potentially life-threatening problem: vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB).

Newborns are naturally born with very low levels of vitamin K, which is essential for the blood to clot properly. Unlike some other nutrients, very little vitamin K crosses the placenta, and breast milk contains only small amounts.

💉 The vitamin K injection given shortly after birth provides your baby with the vitamin K they need to help prevent serious bleeding.

And this protection is incredibly important:

⚠️ According to the CDC, babies who do not receive the vitamin K shot are 81 times more likely to develop vitamin K deficiency bleeding than babies who receive the shot.

The risk doesn’t end after the first few days. Late VKDB can occur up to 6 months of age, and it can cause serious bleeding, including bleeding in the brain. In many cases, babies may appear completely healthy before a sudden bleeding event occurs. (CDC)

The good news? VKDB is highly preventable. A single vitamin K shot given after birth provides protection against this potentially devastating complication. (CDC)

✨ Safe and effective
✨ Given as a single injection
✨ Recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics
✨ Helps protect against potentially life-threatening bleeding

We know there are many decisions to make when welcoming a new baby, and our goal is always to help families make informed choices based on the best available evidence.

💛 A small shot can provide important protection during your baby’s first months of life.

If you’re expecting or have questions about vitamin K, talk with your pediatrician or healthcare provider. We’re here to answer your questions and help you feel confident in your baby’s care.

🥛 Raw Milk & Dairy Products: What Parents Should Know

We’ve been hearing more questions about raw milk and dairy products lately, so here’s what families should know.

🐄 What is raw milk?
Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized. Pasteurization is a heating process that kills harmful germs while keeping the milk’s important nutrients.

⚠️ Why does it matter?
Raw milk and products made from raw milk can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites that may cause serious illness. Children are especially at risk because their immune systems are still developing.

Common germs found in raw milk can include:
🦠 E. coli
🦠 Salmonella
🦠 Listeria
🦠 Campylobacter

These infections can cause:
🤢 Vomiting
💧 Diarrhea
🤒 Fever
😣 Stomach cramps
🏥 In severe cases, hospitalization or even life-threatening illness

🧀 What about cheese and other dairy products?
Raw milk isn’t just found in milk—it can also be used to make cheese, yogurt, cream, and ice cream. When purchasing dairy products, look for the word “pasteurized” on the label.

🥛 Is pasteurized milk still nutritious?
Yes! Pasteurized milk provides the same important nutrients children need, including:
✔️ Calcium
✔️ Protein
✔️ Vitamin D (when fortified)
✔️ Vitamin A
✔️ Zinc

💚 Our Recommendation
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants and children consume pasteurized milk and dairy products to reduce the risk of foodborne illness while still receiving all the nutritional benefits dairy has to offer.

Have questions about your child’s nutrition? We’re always happy to help! Talk with your pediatric provider at your child’s next visit. 🩺💙

🌱 Did You Know? Modern Exposures May Influence When Puberty Begins

Puberty is a normal part of growing up, but research suggests that several modern-day factors may play a role in when it starts.

Some of these include:

🧴 Environmental exposures – Certain chemicals found in everyday products, like some plastics and personal care items, may affect hormones.

🥗 Body composition – Research has found that a higher BMI during childhood is associated with earlier pubertal milestones in girls. Healthy nutrition and regular physical activity support normal growth and development for all children.

🏙️ Our environment – Where children live and play matters, too. Factors such as air pollution, limited access to green spaces, and exposure to bright artificial light at night are being studied for their potential impact on growth and development.

💙 Psychological stress – Ongoing stress may also influence a child’s developing body.

While many of these factors are outside our control, focusing on healthy habits can make a positive difference:

✅ Encourage daily physical activity and outdoor play when possible.
✅ Serve a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
✅ Reduce unnecessary exposure to certain chemicals by following product directions and choosing safer options when possible.
✅ Create a calming bedtime routine and limit bright screens before bed.
✅ Foster a supportive, low-stress environment where your child feels safe and heard.

Every child develops at their own pace, and these factors do not determine when puberty will begin for any one child. If you have concerns about early or delayed puberty, we’re here to help. Talk with your pediatric provider—we’re happy to answer your questions and guide your family every step of the way. 💚
