Bluegrass Council of the Blind, Inc. BCB is the only nonprofit exclusively serving the needs of adults with low to no vision in Central KY.

We are just a phone call away, and no referral or insurance information is needed to start services! The Bluegrass Council of the Blind’s mission is to increase independence, security and quality of life for Kentuckians affected by vision loss through peer support, technology, training and additional resources. Services are free of charge and provided to anyone directly or indirectly impacted by t

he effects of a loss of sight. Among the services offered are:
- Monthly peer support group meetings
- Monthly community outings
- Monthly Assistive Technology training
- Membership with quarterly membership meetings
- Information and referral to programs or agencies to assist in adjustment
- Lending library and distribution of assistive technology

BCB's Peer Support Group / Lunch & Learn meets the fourth Wednesday of each month from noon to 2 PM at the Bluegrass Council of the Blind office. The first hour includes socializing, sharing of tips and tricks on the topic of the month, and a lunch. The second hour is an educational program with topics related to the visually impaired community. Guest presenters discuss a variety of topics, including visual aids, exercise, mobility tips, and legislative issues affecting the blind and visually impaired. The Bluegrass Council of the Blind offers Assistive Technology training and demonstrations of various aids, appliances, and software specific to the needs of blind and visually impaired adults. And we have a large lending library of devices, plus devices for distribution. Our bi-monthly newsletter contains news and a listing of activities at BCB, current legislative actions affecting the blind, and other information on activities within the community that may be of interest.

We enjoyed a fun and tasty community outing last week at the Fayette County Extension Office Kitchen!
Sam provided a demo of the Tovala smart oven to cook chicken slices. While the chicken cooked, we prepared a salad using fresh vegetables using safe chopping techniques and a high contrast cutting board.
We learned some new techniques, learned about new adaptive equipment, and enjoyed the food!

We enjoyed another tasty and informative Lunch & Learn last week! We started out with delicious sandwiches from DV8 Kitchen delivered to us by a new volunteer! Thank you, Michael!

After we enjoyed lunch, we welcomed Marty Brown with St. Joseph's Helpers to tell us more about this organization. St. Joseph’s Helpers is an organization founded on Christian values, made up of men and women who volunteer their time and their talents to help those in need to feel safe and secure in their homes. They serve Seniors, Veterans, those with Physical Challenges and those who just need a helping hand. Examples of projects include repairing a leaky faucet, exterior railings, minor electrical repair, changing light bulbs, portable ramps, Spring/Fall yard clean ups, and more!

We enjoyed a wonderful Community Outing yesterday at the Lexington Senior Center!

We started with a tour of the center led by Director Kristy Stambaugh. Then she led us outside, and we took a short walk to arrive at the new Sensory Garden. The garden has 160 tactile tiles arranged around three raised beds filled with beautiful blooming plants. The tiles were created for the Senior Center with the help of Boy Scouts and other volunteers.

We each found tiles that spoke to us, and there is truly something for everyone, even a tile that looks like a plate of spaghetti! If you haven't seen this new addition, make plans to visit soon! We were fortunate that the weather was perfect, and after experiencing the garden, we enjoyed lunch and conversation in the covered picnic area.

An enjoyable time was had by all!

I wanted to provide an update on our school supply donations before the week ends. We received a terrific donation from a BCB supporter who lives in another state. This box full of supplies arrived today! That's 150 #2 pencils in the box next to the crayons. Thank you, Susan!

We still have next week to collect supplies, and then we'll bring them to the United Way of the Bluegrass at the end of next week. Stop by and see us next week and drop off some school supplies!

Happy Monday! We've received several donations of school supplies, and we want to extend a big thank you to Kimberly May and her friend Lisa!

We are still accepting donations until Thursday, August 6. Please bring your donations to our office, and we will happily start another big box! Thank you!

We enjoyed another tasty and informative Lunch & Learn yesterday, and a good time was had by all!

We would like to especially thank our volunteer Mary who not only picked up the lunches for us today but also paid for them! We are so thankful to have such wonderful volunteers who support us and really believe in the mission of our organization.

We were joined by Todd and Laura Stephens who are NFB Newsline Kentucky. They shared the various ways to access NFB-NEWSLINE® and the many news and information outlets that you can access to stay informed on current events and topics of interest.
