Lake County Care Collective is so excited to partner with Lanie Kuhlman!

Lanie Kuhlman is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) based in Grayslake, Illinois. She has over 20 years of dedicated experience in therapeutic healthcare.

Lanie is the founder and owner of Integrated Cancer Counseling, PLLC, and partners with the Lake County Care Collective to provide specialized care in the North Shore and Lake County area.

• Clinical Focus: Her primary expertise lies in oncology counseling, hospice care, and crisis intervention. She addresses the emotional gaps in traditional medical care—such as managing intense anxiety, existential grief, role/identity shifts, and uncertainty.
• Support Network: Her practice extends past the individual diagnosed with cancer to offer structured support for spouses, parents, children, and caregivers navigating secondary trauma and bereavement.
• Personal Connection: Her career focus is deeply personal; she is a cancer survivor herself and has served as a caregiver walking both of her parents through their respective cancer journeys.

ADHD can affect relationships in ways that are easy to misread.

In her Epijennetics article, “The Importance of Understanding ADHD Relationships: Therapist Tips for Navigating ADHD Challenges in Relationships,” Jennifer Martin Rieck, LCPC, explores how ADHD can shape attention, emotional regulation, executive functioning, impulsivity, frustration tolerance, and sensitivity to criticism or rejection.

“These symptoms are merely the tip of the iceberg with ADHD.”— Jennifer Martin Rieck, The Importance of Understanding ADHD Relationships

A missed detail or unfinished task may be experienced as “they don’t care,” but Jennifer encourages readers to look more closely at the patterns underneath the behavior. ADHD-related inattentiveness, overwhelm, or task paralysis can be connected to executive-function challenges—not a lack of love or commitment.

Her article offers practical reminders for partners and families:

•Learn more about how ADHD affects attention, emotions, and follow-through.

•Talk in quieter, lower-distraction settings when possible.

•Use planners, alarms, reminders, and other external supports.

•Notice overwhelm and frustration before they become shutdown or conflict.

•Focus on coaching and skill-building rather than criticism or shame.

•Consider individual or relationship counseling when patterns feel stuck.

Jennifer also writes:

“Helping to reduce overwhelm or helping to apply external motivation is much more impactful than criticizing or shaming.”— Jennifer Martin Rieck, The Importance of Understanding ADHD Relationships

Understanding does not mean ignoring impact or avoiding accountability. It means creating a more accurate starting point for communication, support, and change.

Healing can begin when we understand the patterns we inherited.

In her blog, “Breaking the Legacy: Healing from Narcissistic Family Trauma,” April Wazny, MA, LCPC, explores how unresolved childhood trauma can shape family relationships, attachment, emotional regulation, and beliefs about self-worth.

The article offers a trauma-informed perspective on:

•How family trauma can echo across generations

•The lasting impact of emotional neglect, invalidation, and conditional love

•Why protective patterns can develop in response to early experiences

•How boundaries, support, and self-care can help restore emotional safety

•Therapeutic approaches that may support healing and cycle-breaking

If you grew up in a relationship marked by manipulation, chronic invalidation, emotional unavailability, or confusion, your experiences deserve to be understood—not minimized. With awareness and compassionate support, it is possible to build healthier patterns for yourself and future generations.
