Protein, Fiber, and Fall Vibes πŸ˜ŽπŸ‚

A simple recipe inspired by apple season! Tart Granny Smith apples are a great way to brighten up your soup and add some health fiber to feed your healthy gut bacteria.

It's Fall y'all! (almost) What better way to start off September than with a warm spicy drink.

πŸ₯œ Walnuts are one of the richest whole-food sources of ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. One serving of this latte provides about 1.6 g of ALA, which supports heart health, nerve health, and brain health. Regularly including ALA-rich foods is associated with cardiovascular benefits and reduced inflammation.

✨ The warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and nutmeg don't just taste incredible... they're loaded with polyphenols and other plant compounds that have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

β˜• Coffee nerd tip: If you're watching your LDL cholesterol, consider filtering your espresso through a paper filter before adding it to the latte. Paper filters remove much of the naturally occurring diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol) which can raise LDL cholesterol in some people when consumed regularly. You still get the coffee, just with fewer of the cholesterol-raising compounds.

πŸ₯› One thing you'll notice about this recipe: there are no emulsifiers. That's intentional.

Many commercial plant milks contain emulsifiers and stabilizers (like gums or lecithins) to keep the fat and water mixed together and create that perfectly creamy texture. Some emulsifiers are being studied for their potential effects on the gut microbiome and intestinal barrier, although the evidence in humans is still evolving. Since this recipe skips them, your latte will naturally separate. Just give it a good stir or use a milk frother before sipping and if you're nursing it over the next hour, keep mixing it as you go. That's the trade-off for a simpler ingredient list.

This is one of my favorite reminders that nutrition is so much more than calories or macros.

One of the best parts of working with a dietitian? You're working with someone who genuinely loves learning about food. We spend our careers diving into the research, questioning nutrition myths, and translating the science into meals that are actually delicious and sustainable.

Now tell me... are you team πŸŽƒ spice, 🍎 c***r, β˜• chai tea? πŸ‘‡

One of the more encouraging findings from the recent UC Davis study was the performance of olive oil products. Of the 20 olive oil products analyzed, 19 were found to be authentic, while one product showed variation between production lots. That stands in stark contrast to the avocado oil products.

At the end of the day, we all know these aren't health foods, but studies like this matter because they are about truth in labeling, product quality, and ensuring that consumers receive what they're paying for. They aren't about declaring certain foods "healthy" or "unhealthy."

Hopefully, the success seen in the olive oil market shows what can happen when transparency, independent testing, and consumer awareness come together. If the same level of accountability continues to grow for avocado oil products, consumers may ultimately benefit from higher-quality products across the board.

Like many of you, we take very seriously what we put into our bodies. If we are paying a premium, we expect quality and authenticity.

We have held off posting about this story to give companies a chance to respond only to be met with disappointment.

Claims of 3rd party testing with no evidence or silence.

Follow us for updates on this story as we will be keeping an eye out for brand statements and will be following up with a post on olive products (which had much better results).

These are the moments that make our week.

Every one of these comments came from a real patient, and each one is a reminder that better health is about so much more than weight or lab results. It's about having the energy to live your life, feeling confident in your own skin, and doing the things you love again.

We're grateful to be part of these stories!

Finding out you have a cardiovascular risk factor can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to define your future. ❀️

Your heart health is about more than cholesterol alone. Inflammation, blood sugar, sleep, stress, gut health, thyroid function, vitamin D, and even oral health all play a roleβ€”and many of these are things you can improve.

My goal isn't to scare you. It's to help you understand your risk and give you practical steps to protect your heart.

Education is the first step toward prevention.
