Sweet Berries, Ancient Methods.
Even though we were late to the harvest the berries held out for us firm and sweet as ever! Thank you Cattail and Sky field! I am so grateful for Shana and all the virtuous effort she puts in to managing the care of this blueberry field. I've worked a lot of organic wild blueberry fields over my years and she is the only one I know of that still uses traditional methods to care for the field: The same methods that have been used here for thousands of years since the glaciers receded! Every fall, we gather tons of leaves and spread them on the field, followed by an intentional, controlled burn in the spring. With the leaves as the fuel, the berry plants are left with the minerals that the tree roots had pulled up from deep in the soil. No diesel to fuel the fire or gas mowers, no chemical sprays, just muscle, traditional wisdom and grit. It just doesn’t get any better than this, I’m so grateful we made it to the harvest for another year.

Today’s forage was gooseberries and milkweed pods. Even if you don’t have the time or space for a garden, you can still harvest nutrient rich wild foods to diversify your diet—and you get the added benefits of sunlight on your skin, fresh air, and movement.
These are some of the foundations of a healthy lifestyle, and equally awesome; the edible wild foods are part of the gifting economy! If you don’t know where to start, we can teach you — To your health.💚

Tomorrow I will be at the Houlton Farmers Market pouring out refreshing healthy drinks. You are encouraged to bring your own jug, any size to fill and bring home to your family. Bring your own cup (BYOC) price list in the picture. We will have Lemon Ginger Echinacea, Shiso juice and Wellness 💚 A 16 oz in our cups are $5. You can’t find this quality or this taste anywhere else. Ingredients are either from our vibrant food ecosystem at BigBrookBotanicals gardens or sourced from organic growers. Lemons, ginger and Shiso are juiced here at our licensed kitchen no more than 24 hours before they reach your lips. It really can’t get much better! We love getting the herbs in you.

I am so overjoyed at this lovely plant that volunteered itself in the garden this year! If any of you have journeyed with this plant you would know of its creative ability to communicate with us. A truly amazing creature is Morning Glory. I am so grateful that it made it into our garden. This is one of the many benefits to allowing the 'weeds' into the garden and working to create an agroecosystem which is how we farm and garden here down at Big Brook.

I love choke cherry season! They bring me fond memories of my first foraging times as a child and my beloved late friend Sara teaching me to make the best ever sun dried cherry leather! 💚 They are a great addition to any edible ecosystem. & btw we propagate them if you are looking to add them to your food system.
