Post-Exercise Oxidative Stress

After a hard workout, what’s the first thing you think about? If you are like me, it’s what to put in your body to maximize recovery - specifically the macronutrients carbohydrates, protein and fat.

Okay, good. We are on the right track. But have you ever thought about what micronutrients are in your macronutrients, specifically, the ones that contain antioxidants?

Did you also know that consuming some antioxidants immediately after exercise can actually impair your fitness gains?

The Benefits of Green Tea Extract

I’m sure you have heard of the potential benefits of green tea but do you know how many systems in the body green tea can really have a positive impact on? Probably more than you think.

Don’t worry if you don’t drink green tea. I’m not trying to get you to start (unless you want to) because, well, you can reap the benefits of green tea by simply using its extract.

Green tea extract, derived from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, is a concentrated source of bioactive compounds that have been widely studied for their impact on health, performance and longevity. Its primary active ingredients (catechins, particularly EGCG) are responsible for many of its physiological benefits.

Let’s dive in...

What are Peptids?

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have more than likely heard of the latest supplement that makes some pretty big promises - peptides.

Hands down, peptides have become one of the fastest-growing trends in the health, fitness and longevity space. But, are they “all that”? Let’s dig in.

At a basic level, peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. But unlike whole proteins, peptides act more like signaling molecules, telling the body what to do and when to do it.

In the body, peptides regulate a wide variety of functions, from hormone production and immune response to tissue repair and metabolism. For example, peptides can influence the release of growth hormone, support collagen production and affect appetite and fat metabolism. This ability to “communicate” with the body is what makes them so intriguing from a performance and longevity standpoint...

Is Chocolate a "Health" Food?

Due to my obsession with chocolate, I know I can definitely place chocolate in the “health” food category but does it really belong there? The answer is one of my favorites, “it depends”.

The benefits of chocolate depend heavily on the cocoa percentage. The percent cocoa listed in chocolate products tells you how much of the product comes from cocoa solids and cocoa butter - the components that contain the beneficial compounds...

How Gut Bacteria Can Improve Carbohydrate Absorption for Athletes

Gut training to increase carbohydrate absorption during training and competition is a hot thing right now and in my professional opinion, will not be going away anytime soon.

If you plan on pushing your body’s limits of carbohydrate absorption, you may be interested in an emerging area of research that suggests the gut microbiome plays a meaningful role in how efficiently you can absorb and utilize carbohydrates.

Nitrates for Health and Performance

Today, I’m talking all about nitrates - naturally occurring compounds that are composed of nitrogen and oxygen.

These compounds may just be that game changer you need to enhance your health and performance so keep reading to learn how they work and where you can get them from via food.

Dietary nitrates are found primarily in vegetables such as spinach, arugula, celery and especially beetroot. Once consumed, nitrates (NO3) are converted in the body to nitrites (NO2) and then to nitric oxide (NO). Yes, that nitric oxide you hear so much about due to its role in vascular health and exercise performance.

A quick primer about nitric oxide. NO helps relax and widen blood vessels, improving blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues. The NO3 to NO2 to NO pathway becomes particularly important during low-oxygen conditions, such as intense exercise. This makes dietary nitrates especially valuable for active individuals for the following reasons:
