The students that we work with here at Southern Kentucky AHEC never cease to amaze us. Emma Neely, pictured below, is a UK 3rd Year Medical student who recently rotated in Corbin. On the very first day of her rotation on her way to the hospital, she was involved in a minor car wreck in which her car was totaled. In response, Emma caught a ride to the hospital with police and was only 10 minutes late on her first day. While we were beyond relieved to hear that she was okay, we were floored at the dedication and perseverance and knew we had to share her story.

Here is what Emma had to say about her rotation:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my experience working with Dr. Butler, a pediatrician in Corbin, KY. The community and office were very welcoming to me despite the rocky start. I was able to learn about the local community through the patient populations and medical practices in a comprehensive way. It was a wonderful experience to see what pediatric medicine is like outside of a large referral center like UK. The hands-on experience and continuity of care I was able to have through just a 3-week rotation greatly improved my learning experience and motivated me to interact more with families.”

Goodbye, Summer 2026! ☀️

These photos highlight an incredible summer, featuring our four health career camps and our visit to the University of Kentucky, where students explored the many health science pathway programs available.

It was a busy and rewarding summer filled with hands-on learning, career exploration, and unforgettable experiences. While summer has come to an end, this is just the beginning for many of these students. We’re excited to continue working with them throughout the 2026–27 school year in our school-based and pipeline programs.

Stay tuned for more opportunities for both high school and college students as we continue inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals!
