September is National Preparedness Month set forth by FEMA to encourage readiness for emergencies and national disasters. While we honor preparedness in the month of September, this is something we take seriously and practice 365 days/year.

Being prepared not only means staying up to date on the most recent evidence based practice and practicing our skills every day, but it also means staying prepared with our friends on the ground. Keeping our fire departments prepared by staying current on LZ classes, doing outreach education with local EMS and fire ensures that we are all ready to care for our patients, provide the best care, and to ensure everyone always stays safe.

Today, and everyday, we are ensuring we are prepared, safe, and always ready for the next call.

Want to know how to get a pilot out of his chair, and fast? Just tell him there’s a chance to get to look at a Cobra helicopter.

The legendary AH-1 Cobra first took to the skies in 1965 and became the world’s first dedicated attack helicopter. Developed by Bell Helicopter during the Vietnam War, the Cobra’s slim profile, tandem seating, and impressive firepower made it a game-changer in military aviation. Over the decades, it has served with distinction around the world and remains an iconic symbol of rotary-wing aviation.
While our crews spend their days flying missions focused on patient care and saving lives, aviation enthusiasts can’t help but appreciate the history and engineering behind aircraft like the Cobra. Its unmistakable silhouette and storied legacy continue to inspire pilots everywhere.

This beautiful aircraft is apart of a volunteer foundation out of Georgia, the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation. These two wonderful pilots allowed us to look at their helicopter and even let PHI1 pilot, Corey, sit in the front seat.

So if you ever need to clear a pilot’s seat in a hurry, just mention a Cobra ride is waiting! 😉

Did you know


PHI partners with the University of Kentucky to help provide rapid critical care transport to pediatric and neonatal patients all over the state. The University of Kentucky’s Kids Crew is a specialty team that provides hospital to hospital critical care transports when patients need it the most. While the Kids Crew does have ambulances they utilize for a lot of their transports, the crew will utilize PHI helicopters in the region to transport the teams to locations that are a little further by ground. This partnership not only helps our medical crew to stay up to date and knowledgeable on neonatal and pediatric care, but more importantly it provides a higher level of care and rapid transport to patients on some of their worst days.

This partnership is one that we are so very grateful for and today we had the opportunity to hang out with some of the team while also doing a little filming.

What a fun day we had yesterday!

We started off the day with a scene flight out of Knox County with one of the best ground crews 🚑🚑

We then got to show some of the security guys at UK our helicopter and gave them a little tour.

And we finished it off with the opportunity to see FiFi up close.

What a great day we had and just some of the few reasons we love this job so much.

Here at PHI London, there isn’t a whole lot we enjoy more than getting to do education with our local EMS services.

While sometimes it’s just another day and another class, the importance of continuing education is something we often forget.
Continuing education is a vital part of providing the highest level of patient care. Continuing education keeps our crews and local EMS providers up to date on the latest evidence based practice. Not only does this ensure the best care to be provided to our patients, but it also creates strong bonds and strengthens relationships between ground and air medical providers. This not only enhances communications, but it ensures we work seamlessly together when every second counts to optimize patient outcomes.

Today we had the opportunity to do just that and taught a finger thoracostomy class at Knox County EMS. Everyone who participated had the opportunity to perform hands on skills to give them the most realistic feel on how to perform this skill. We are so thankful for this group and the opportunity to work with some of the best.

Another perk to this amazing job is never knowing where you might end up next.

Where is the next flight going to? Nashville, Louisville, Indianapolis? Maybe even Charleston, West Virginia!

We had the opportunity to experience some new scenery and travel to an area we don’t visit very often.
Thank you to Pikeville Medical Center for allowing us to continue care for your patient and sending us to an area that is a little less familiar but not any less beautiful.
