Independence at Home

Independence at Home IAH offers no-cost programs and services designed to assist older adults and their caregivers.

Independence at Home is a community service of SCAN, a senior-focused organization founded in Long Beach, California in 1977. The goal then was to create a program to provide seniors easy access to community-based services that would allow them to remain healthy and independent at home. Today, Independence at Home offers a range of programs to meet the needs of seniors, disabled adults and their caregivers -- including government programs and in-home assistance, case management and referrals to resources. If you or a loved one needs help living safely at home, please contact Independence at Home at 866-421-1964.

Many of us knew Dolly Parton as a beloved singer, storyteller, and advocate. But her final years also shine a light on a reality millions of caregivers know all too well: when you're focused on caring for someone you love, it's easy to put your own health and well-being last.

In this recent CNN article, Dolly's caregiving journey highlights the challenges family caregivers face every day and reminds us of an important truth: caring for yourself is not selfish. It's essential.

💙 If you're caring for a loved one, take a moment to check in with yourself today. Schedule that appointment, take a break, or reach out for support. Your health matters too, we're here to help: 1-866-421-1964 or independenceathome.org.

Like many caregivers, Dolly Parton didn’t take care of her own health while caring for her ailing husband. That’s not unusual, even among people with resources.

Can Music Help Someone with Alzheimer’s?

According to the Mayo Clinic, familiar music may help people living with Alzheimer’s disease reconnect with memories, reduce stress, improve mood, and create meaningful moments with loved ones.

Whether it's a favorite song from years past or a cherished family tune, music can be a simple yet powerful way to support emotional well-being and connection. 🎵 Get free tunes from Nostalgic Radio: http://nostalgicradio.org/

There’s nothing we enjoy more than getting out into the community, answering questions, sharing resources, advocating for older adults and their families, and joining forces with organizations that share our commitment to healthy aging and independence.

This month, our Outreach Team was proud to join Congresswoman Nanette Barragán’s Annual Senior Luncheon and Resource Fair. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and learn more about the support available through IAH.

Together, we're building stronger, healthier communities for older adults and those who care for them.

Community Health Workers play an essential role in advancing health equity, connecting people to vital health and social services, and serving as trusted advocates within the communities they support.

This National Community Health Worker Awareness Week, we proudly celebrate the people who help bridge the gap between health care and community support every day.

Please join us in recognizing community health workers at IAH, Gladys O. from our Homeless Services Team and Yendi M. from our Insights Team for their dedication, compassion, and commitment.
