Bernie's Pitch for a Liver Bernie DeCristofaro’s liver transplant journey. Due to liver disease, he started the search for a living liver donor at NYU Langone in October 2025.

On 12/14/25 he received the gift of life from a deceased organ donor. He passed away 12/27/25.

Happy Father’s Day! Bernie was many things to many people, but there was nothing more important to him than being Dad and Grandpa to Allie, Nick, Gavin, Cole, and Kylee. He loved them more than anything and was endlessly proud of each of them. 💙💛

Coach Bernie DeCristofaro Award:
In December, we lost one of the true baseball men in our area. Bernie DeCristofaro was an important part of the Pope John Baseball family for many years, and his impact on our program will not be forgotten. In his honor, we created this award to represent everything he believed the game should stand for. The Bernie DeCristofaro Award is presented to the player who best embodies the old-school values Coach Bernie believed baseball was built on — toughness, grit, accountability, leadership, and an unselfish, team-first mentality. This award honors the player who shows up every day ready to work, competes on every pitch, and leads by example both on and off the field. It recognizes someone who takes pride in doing the little things the right way, owns mistakes without excuse, and earns the respect of teammates and coaches through preparation, consistency, mental toughness, and a relentless commitment to Pope John Baseball. This year’s recipient is Joseph Manco. Joseph represents exactly what this award stands for. He brings a steady presence to our program and competes the right way every time he steps on the field. Whether in practice or in games, he is reliable, prepared, and focused on doing his job for the team. He doesn’t look for attention — he lets his actions, effort, and consistency speak for him. When mistakes happen, he owns them, learns from them, and moves forward without excuses, continuing to compete and support his teammates at a high level. He is the type of player coaches trust and teammates respect because he embraces accountability, plays with toughness, and never shies away from doing whatever is needed for the good of the team. Joseph embodies the standard of Pope John Baseball and the values Coach Bernie DeCristofaro lived by and passed on to so many in our program.

Hi friends! I came across this video today and it made me smile. Summer 2020 when Bernie came back to manage the Pastime team mid-COVID. 15 minutes to game time and his starting pitcher wasn’t there…so you know what he did. He grabbed his glove and started warming up as I’m yelling that I need to write out the line up and was I really putting him in to start. 🤣 (With his retired number on the fence in the background! 1️⃣6️⃣)
Pitcher rolled in a few minutes later and spared his arm, but I have a feeling this 64 year old would have put a few college kids to shame if he wound up on the hill that day. ⚾️💙💛
