Recently I’ve been called to wildcrafting. 🌱

Alienated by human behavior, I felt the need to get close to the Earth. So my daughter and I set out to see what plants we would find. I love that we can do this together. I love how it connects us deeper to the Earth and the Land we live on. I love that it teaches her a different narrative-one of interconnectedness with the world around us. 🌾

Gathering wild plants for food and medicine has been nothing short of freeing, calming and grounding.
Tending to the Earth while listening to the bees foraging alongside us, smelling the soil and the sweetness of the spring air feels like medicine itself. 🐝

I’m reading up on wild plants and their natural chemicals and phytonutrients that they developed to deal with environmental stressors like sun exposure and bugs. They are vibrant medicinal plants to us humans. 🍄

We didn’t have to go far to find them. They were right there in our backyard. For now we are sticking with plantain, dandelion and nettles and turning those into medicinal poultices and tea. 🍵

What do my bare feet in the grass have to do with the health of every single being on the planet?
🌿
It is time to drastically rethink human health and the health of planet Earth. Sustainability only sustains the slow downward trend of a broken system. We need regenerative agriculture, farming practices that rebuild our soil, replenish our water supplies and reverse global warming.
The enormity of this task can feel overwhelming. We live in a story of separation: Since I am separate from you, your well being does not affect me. The more we can dominate over nature the better off we will be. There is an “other”.
🌿
But there is a new story, the story of Interconnectedness. In this story our well being is intimately connected to the well being of others, nature and planet Earth. Our health and wellness has everything to do with our daily choices and our environment. I eat the food, I drink the water, I laugh and cry with my community, I go outside and breathe the air, I swim in the lakes, I live on planet Earth. Do you?
🌿
We all just have to do our own little part in this new story. Love the small piece of earth that sustains you, join together as a community, as citizens of this Earth (not separate as Americans or Europeans or whatever identity we give ourselves) Connect your bare feet to the soil that feeds you and heals you. In this way our impact will grow exponentially.

Please share with whomever needs to hear this. 🙏🏽

Do you want to increase your physical and mental health as well as your quality of life?⠀
🌿⠀
The health of our bodies is reflected in the health of our environment, specifically soil health. What we do to our soil is what we do to our health. ⠀
The human microbiome and the soil microbiome function similarly. Healthy soil equals life force. ⠀
🌿⠀
Farms worldwide use over 6 billion pounds of pesticides per year. Glyphosate is the main ingredient in these pesticides, specifically Roundup. Currently this chemical is banned in 28 countries but not the US. It is now in the water we drink and the air that we breathe. Glyphosate kills the soil microbiome and damages our gut lining by suppressing it of oxygen. ⠀
🌿⠀
We need to think of ourselves as a connected organism and an extension of Mother Nature. Maybe then we would understand better the importance of nurturing our environment. ⠀

Once I realized the profound interconnectedness that humans have with nature, it shifted the entire approach towards my patients’ health and my own health. 🌿⠀

At the root of this interconnectedness is the health of our soil. The same rules apply to keeping soil healthy as to keeping our gut healthy. Chemicals such as glyphosate, fertilizers, pesticides destroy the microbial diversity and abundance in the soil leading not only to decreased nutrient density but also destruction of the human gut microbiome. 🌿⠀

What we do to our planet we do to our bodies! It is critical that we make this connection. 🌿⠀

May this truth settle into your bones and allow you the freedom to chose wisely how you treat your body and our planet. 🌿⠀
