Black communities pioneered community-based care long before it was “a system.”
Before adult day services were formalized, Black churches, fraternal organizations, and mutual aid societies cared for elders, people with disabilities, and those with mental illness — at home and in community, not institutions.
➡️ Adult day services today reflect that same model: dignity, familiarity, routine, and connection.

Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller — a hidden giant in mental health history
Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, one of the first Black psychiatrists in the U.S., was a pioneer in Alzheimer’s and dementia research in the early 1900s — decades before it became widely studied.

Memory care
Cognitive stimulation
Dementia-informed adult day programming
Yet his name is rarely mentioned.

Adult day services support what research now proves: social connection protects the brain.
Long before modern psychology caught up, Black communities understood that:
Isolation worsens mental health

Purpose preserves dignity
Adult day services quietly fight depression, cognitive decline, and loneliness every single day — especially for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Black women have always been the backbone of caregiving systems.
From informal caregiving to licensed facilities, Black women historically:
Ran boarding homes
Cared for elders with mental illness
Supported adults with disabilities
Led community wellness efforts
Much of today’s adult care infrastructure was built on that unseen labor and leadership.
