Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a pharmacogenetic disorder in which exposure to volatile anesthetics, such as halothane, isoflurane, sevoflurane, and desflurane, or the depolarizing muscle relaxant succinylcholine, precipitates a hypermetabolic crisis in skeletal muscle.
How volatile anesthetics and succinylcholine trigger a hypermetabolic crisis in genetically susceptible patients through dysregulation of the RyR1 calcium release channel.
