When I say become a weapon against abuse, I mean become the kind of person who refuses to look away.

Learn what abuse looks like. Call out misogyny before it escalates. Intervene when it’s safe. Get help. Document what you can. Support the person being harmed. And please stop protecting abusers dahil kaibigan mo, kapatid mo, jowa mo, sikat sila, or “mabait naman siya sakin.”

And yes, be the “difficult” person if that means breaking cycles of misogyny, silence and enabling.

Be the person who asks the uncomfortable question. The one who says “that’s not okay.” The one who refuses to laugh at the s*xist joke. The one who doesn’t let predatory behavior slide just to keep the peace.

And gender does not matter here. Anyone can be abused. Anyone can enable abuse. Anyone can stand against it, whatever gender you identify as.

If you witness or learn about an incident, prioritize safety first. If there is immediate danger, contact emergency services, campus or workplace security, or local authorities. If it’s safe, help the person get somewhere secure, preserve messages/screenshots/photos, write down dates and details while they’re fresh, and ask the survivor what support they want before making decisions for them. You can also report through the school, workplace, organization, police or a local s*xual-assault support service depending on the situation.

And if you’re ever in a position to raise, mentor, teach or lead people, raise better humans.

Raise kids who understand consent. Raise boys who don’t think silence equals permission. Raise girls who know they’re allowed to have boundaries. Raise people who intervene, who believe that dignity matters, who don’t protect abusers for convenience.

Be the ate, kuya, tita, tito, parent, teacher, boss or friend who breaks the cycle.

Be the change you wish someone had been brave enough to make before you.

Silence protects abusers. Community protects people.
