Governor Gavin Newsom made the announcement today in Sacramento that he has signed a number of measures to strengthen California's cannabis laws, expand the legal market for cannabis, and address the negative effects of cannabis prohibition.

Despite the fact that the state has made significant progress since cannabis legalization, the industry and consumers continue to face challenges from local opposition, rigid bureaucracy, and federal prohibition. The Governor is urging legislators and other policymakers to work harder to remove these obstacles.

Governor Newsom stated, "The promise of cannabis legalization remains out of reach for too many Californians." These measures build on the significant progress our state has made toward this objective; however, there is still a lot of work to be done to establish a legal cannabis industry that is fair, safe, and able to last. I anticipate collaborating with the Assembly and policymakers to acknowledge w**d legitimization in networks across California completely."

Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced), whose SB 1326 was signed by the Governor, established a procedure for California to enter into agreements with other states to permit cannabis transactions with entities outside of California. Patients' access to legal, regulated cannabis products is expanded by Senator Scott Wiener's (D-San Francisco) SB 1186, which overrides local bans on the delivery of medicinal cannabis.

Two bills to further relax California's failed prohibition of cannabis were also signed by the governor. Assemblymember Mia Bonta's (D-Oakland) AB 1706 guarantees the final sealing of cannabis-related convictions for Californians. Additionally, Assemblymember Bill Quirk's (D-Hayward) AB 2188 safeguards Californians from employment discrimination based on their non-workplace use of cannabis.

The Administration's efforts to improve California's cannabis legalization framework are the foundation for these bills.
